House votes to de-fund ACORN
Posted: Thursday, September 17, 2009 2:20 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: Congress

From NBC's Luke Russert
The House, in a motion to recommit attached to the student loan bill, has voted overwhelmingly to de-fund ACORN.

It was a bipartisan vote, with more than 300 members voting for the measure. (We'll get the full numbers/vote breakdown shortly.)

This goes further than the Senate did; the Senate took money out of one bill. This is to de-fund the group completely –– for any money the House would appropriate.

*** UPDATE *** House Minority Whip Eric Cantor's office just sent around this statement:

“ACORN has violated serious federal laws, and today the House voted to ensure that taxpayer dollars would no longer be used to fund this corrupt organization. All federal ties should be severed with ACORN, and the FBI should investigate its activity. This united Republican effort to defund ACORN is a victory for the rule of law and taxpayers across the country.”

This would be excellent news.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) offered the Defund-ACORN bill to the Student Loans bill. The House vote convincingly to cut ALL federal funds to ACORN.

Vote: 345 to 75. Complete results here

They attached it to an student aid bill that I hadn't heard about...

He has no problem throwing ACORN under the bus. The question is if anyone in that outfit has enough dirt on him to walk away unscathed.

As I understand it, that student loan bill makes it illegal for students to get loans for college anywhere but the Federal Government. So.... we're cheering this? By all means, defund ACORN, but let's not celebrate at the further expansion of government.

If ACORN does get defunded, I would lay low if I was one of those kids.

Lots of angry unemployed ACORN workers looking for some pay back, I bet.

No, this will be signed - no question. There is no way this administration would pass on such a huge power/money-grab. ACORN is really small potatoes, and they're already dead in the figurative sense (they just don't know it yet). Y'all are missing the big picture.

That is not what it does. Currently, certain Federal student loans are serviced by third parties. My federal loan was serviced by Key Bank.

This brings all Federal loans under the Direct Loan program. So all Federal loans now come directly from the Fed. You can still get private loans if you wish, it does not touch any private lending policies.

There is some stuff I don't like in the bill, like the racist $2.55 billion grant to black / minority schools.

Anyway aside from some stuff I don't like the bill is not all that unpalatable, I'll take it.

Imagine the shit storm over that conflict of interest. If he has a brain in his head, he'll sign this one through and call it "the will of the people". I have no doubt that he'll distance himself from ACORN as much as possible now.

Well, the student aid bill was going to pass anyway, at least that's what I assume when Issa hooked up this de-funding to it to get it done quickly. You have to remember that Student Loans were ALWAYS GOVERNMENT GUARANTEED, so it's not like they were a real commercial loan in the first place.

You're right, nothing to celebrate. ACORN will return in another incarnation. Hard to justify Congress taking over Student Aid loans as any sort of Commerce Clause issue. When you're a monopoly it's not really commerce but more like taxation.

It might have passed, but without significant Republican cooperation. The ACORN amendment guarantees bi-partisan cooperation. In 3 years, during the campaign in 2012, this bill (an expansion of government to regulate student loans) would have made a nice soundbyte to help describe the Government takeover of the Auto, banking, insurance, lending and health-care industries... In 3 years, ACORN will be forgotten, and this measure to usurp private lending rights will be all that remains - and it will be a BI-PARTISAN measure.

Check out Sen Burris (D IL) running from a reporter asking why he still supports ACORN ...

"The vote was essentially symbolic because the student aid bill did not actually provide any funding to ACORN. But it does give Republicans more momentum as they continue to keep the pressure on ACORN, which is on its heels."
