My computer was locked by the homeland security dept at work. They are asking for $300.00 to unlock it. Anyone ever had this happen? No phone number to call. I was letting arfcom run in the background and it popped up. Sounds like a scam

It's a virus.  You're probably going to have a helluva time removing it.

I dealt with that aboout a year ago. It's a virus of some sort, which required Malwarebytes to remove while running in safe mode with network.

Best of luck to ya!

That's just the new National Computer Act thing. You have to pay $300 and fill out paperwork, then wait 9 months for your tax stamp to arrive and then you can be online.

If it's like the one that I'm familiar with, the first thing it does is delete the entire System Restore exe file.  Only way to get it was to use Malwarebytes AntiRootkit and Chameleon.  Only way to use them was if you had a back door into the system, like an alternate user ID or guest user already set up.

Sounds like the "FBI" virus from a couple of years ago.  I got hit with such a program a couple year back and I could not get any security program on my PC to run and I couldn't load any new security programs thanks to the virus.

Go buy a copy of Kaspersky antivirus.  Run it from the install CD to let it clean the PC before trying to install it.  Kaspersky is the only antivirus I know of that lets you do that and with some viruses that can detect a new AV program or anti-malware program trying to install and will block or corrupt that installation.  A program that can run from the CD is the only answer to those viruses.
