BAKERSFIELD, Calif. –– Sheriff's deputies say it's been decades since they've seen so many home invasions in such a short amount of time. Police and deputies said it's pretty logical. Once the economy goes down, crime goes up, especially burglaries and robberies, and in recent cases home invasions.
Deputy Kenny Williams of the Sheriffs Office said,"I've been in the department 23 years. I can't recall a stream of incidents occurring like this before."
In about one week, three home invasion robberies took place, two of them in east Bakersfield. Police said it's extremely unusual.
Sgt. Greg Terry of the Bakersfield Police Department said, "Home invasiona are very rare. Random ones are very rare. Most often the case there is a connection between victim and suspect."
"It seems like the people hit recently are connected to the robbers through narcotics use," said Williams.
In at least one of these cases, the robber blamed the tough economy on his actions. Whatever the reason, police said robbers usually target victims who carry a lot of money or valuables.
"Not necessarily that the victim is engaging in any criminal conduct. It could be the type of business they're in," said Terry.
Robbers then typically stalk the victim before robbing them, usually by knocking on their door and forcing entry.
"Don't keep the valuables that you may have at your house. Limit your patterns, don't have the same pattern. Don't leave and come home at the same time every day. Change the route you come home. Be aware of your surroundings," said Terry.
If you see someone following you, chances are you're being targeted. As always don't open your door to strangers. Also police recommend sturdy locks and an alarm.
