Has anyone ever been to Iceland?  From pictures I've seen it looks like one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

I wonder what their gun laws are like?

If I recall, Iceland is part of one of the Scandinavian countries (Norway, Finland, etc...) and is also part of the EU - which means that whatever their current gun laws, in a few years they probably won't allow private ownership.

I could be wrong, but I seem to have heard that somewhere...

Actually, I've heard it's quite nice and doesnt really deserve it's name. I think they actually named it Iceland to keep people away. I've heard Greenland is more cold and barren than Iceland.

It probably is limited, judging from what I've been able to find on the web.  Two interesting things:

Police officers do not cary firearms at all.

You can import firearms for hunting if you get a permit from the police.  The impression I get is that this is a pretty straightforward process, [b]un[/b]like, say getting a CCW in the PRK.

But that's not my main concern anyway.  I just know I want to visit this place.

I layed  over there a few times for a couple days each time going into Norway.

My observations were from Keflavik AFB, on base only. Transient GIs weren't allowed off base (at least we were told) and even the guys stationed there had a curfew imposed by the Icelandic government.
 
Weather was very moderate, even in Jan/Feb. Plenty of volcanic activity I guess. From what I saw it was a very beautiful place. Extremely green with rolling hills.

The women were very interesting to look at. Skin was generally alabaster, so white that you could easily see their veins beneath the surface.  Blue, Blue eyes, almost translucent and very blond hair. It was easy to why the Vikings tried to keep this place a secret.

Iceland supposedly has one of the most genetically pure populations left on earth. I've heard that the immigration laws are incredibly tough.

From everything I have seen there are some major BABES over there!!

I've been there.  The NATO base is in Keflavik which is about a half hour from Rekavik(spelling)- the only real city.  The country is either farm land, barren landscape (old lava fields) or glaciers.  No trees anywhere except what people have planted in their yards.

They have some of the worlds best fly-fishing (second to New Zealand).  The major tourists attractions are the glaciers, waterfall, geysers, and the Blue Lagoon-which is a geo-thermic hot spring that people go to swim or lay in.

Typical scandinavian-type people (blonde hair/blue eyes).  There is virtually no crime but the police have the right to search vehicles, homes, you, etc without any warrants or reasons (they also don't carry).  There is no illiteracy and nearly half the adult population has written and published a book.

Oh-yeah...beers are $9 dollars a piece at local bars. - Everything not made locally (imports) is expensive.  There's a black market for things such as blue jeans, cigarettes, alchol, etc, that are smuggled off the Navy base.

The weather there is about the same as the New England area around New York / New Jersey (just windier).

Hmmm, maybe I should let you guys in on a little Hun secret - the Vikings were some of the world's first real estate developers.

They loved Iceland, so they called it that just to keep everyone away.

They needed settlers to go to Greenland, so that's why they called it that!

The language spoken by Icelandic folks is so similar to that spoken by the Vikings, that I've heard it said that a Viking from 1000 AD could listen to any television or radio show, and, except for the technical words (like 'television' and 'radio'), he would understand everything that was said.

The women of Iceland are said to be the most beautiful in the world for one simple reason - when the Norsemen were sacking Europe, they would rape and kill just about any woman they came across. If the woman was truly beautiful, however, they would kidnap her and take her as a wife, or trade for her with fellow Norsemen.

So here we see a real life example of Darwin's survival of the fittest!

Anyway, Iceland has one of the highest rates of illegitimacy in Europe!

Aaahhh Keflavik.  I spent a year there, 1981-1982 as a matter of fact.  In the summer time when it's not storming, it' a great place to be.  All two months of it.  After that it's pretty much just cold and windy.  Iceland is very green, but if you take a close look, a lot of that green is moss, not grass. I remember lots of moss and lots of rocks.  Rocks everywhere.  In the summer time the sun would set around midnight and come back up around
4AM.  In the winter time the sun would come up around 10AM and set around 2PM.  Summer was a lot of fun and winter was rather depressing.  As for what to do.  It is correct that the fishing is suppose to be great, but back in 81 they wanted over a $100.00 a day just to get access to one of the rivers.  I don't know what it is today.  While I was there I visited the Capital Reykjavik many times. The shop owners were always very friendly and very honest.  In fact all the Icelandic's I ran into were very honest and a little standoffish.  There's was almost no crime in the country at all.  On the base everyone left their keys in their cars and no one ever locked their doors except in the dorms.  While there, I visited the glacier, the geyser, a frozen water fall, did some rock climbing and followed a cave  about a mile and a half to it's end.  But mostly I got drunk.  That seems to have been the thing to do in Iceland. Some of the women are very pretty when you can find them.  Most are kind of homely but look better the more you drink.  The guys there don't take kindly to dating their women. When I was there, there were more men on the island than women.  Back then, Iceland was more Socialist than Democratic, and I don't recall ever meeting anyone who owned a gun.  I know I never saw one for sale in any of the stores. I would have remembered that.

I spent a couple of days at a refueling point in some farmer's field in the middle of nowhere and everyone who came by to check us out (including the farmer's daughters) spoke english.
