Ok, just got back from the tax guy and I'm getting a nice refund.
I got my first AR last week and now it's time to venture into a revolver. Currently I have the following in my handgun collection: Walther P99 (.40S&W) Walther P22 (5 inch) 2 Bulgarian Makarov's Beretta 9000S (.40S&W) H&K USP 45 (fullsize) Springfield XD-9 Springfield Ultra Compact. I'd like the revolver to be stainless and something that would make a good trail gun for being up here in MT, so no .22's or 12" barreled and scoped T-Rex killers. Not going to try and use it for a CCW either. Oh, I'm 6'4", 265 pounds so it doesn't have to be anything too "delicate" or "forgiving" either. Ok, let the suggestions (and the fur) fly. Got some things to do so I'll check back in later |

S&W 629 or 686.
Either one is good, it's up to you whether you want .357 or .44 |
Smith & Wesson Model 610 with a 6" barrel.
It can fire 10mm as well as 40S&W |
S&W pre-lock 686 or 66...4in. barrel. Even a 2 1/2in. 66 would make a very nice trail gun.
Get you a used Smith & Wesson Model 19-3. It's a .357 Magnum.
I had one with a 6" ribbed barrel. Man that was a nice gun. Kinda regret selling it. ETA - hey Airwolf, are you out of Kalifornia for good now? |
Pick up a .455 Webley with the cylinder shaved to take .45ACP in half moon clips. When you run out of bullets, you can still beat a bear to death with it.
How come it's cockeyed? You better wear a helmet when you shoot it! |

Buy my Ruger GP 100 4" stainless .357 Mag for the low low price of $325. ;)
That's a deal.....I have one just like it and love it. |
+1 on the S&W 686. 6" or 4" barrel are both nice.
Ruger GP 100 series is pretty nice too (although I believe they have cast frames rather than forged like the S&W). What the hell... get both. One or the other in 4". The other one in 6". |
Dan Wesson Model 714, preferably with the pistol pack to get the 2,4,6 and 8" barrels.

I've always been a fan of Ruger revolvers, I have a Super Blackhawk in .44 mag.
Check out the Ruger revolver line up. www.ruger.com/Firearms/P-SearchCategory.html |
What do people think of Taurus? Im not much of a wheelgun guy.
ETA sorry for the hijack |
i covet your gun. |
I have 1 revovler, a S&W 'something'-lite in .38 for the Mrs.
I like it. |
Real man needs a .44
S&W 629 Mountain Gun. Or a Ruger Super Red Hawk will do as well. |
JMHO but unless you reload stick to 357.
44 ammo will eat you alive in ammo costs. |
Things really have changed around here... 24 responses and not one "I'll never buy from Smith & Wesson and/or Ruger" post.
I don't buy from them at all. |

Big DITTO. |

Smith & Wesson model 66 Stainless-
.357 Magnum(you can run .38s for plinkin') Hi-Viz front sight blade, adjustable rear. VERY NICE IMO |
Any of the S&W Aluminium/Stainless, or Scandium/Titanium offerings. Looking at the indexing and lockup, S&W seems to be the best quality. Go to a good gunstore and handle a bunch of them. They make them in .38+P, 357, .44, 45APC The 45's are sweet if you are not planning to ccw it regularly.
If you CCW, then consider one with an internal hammer. The only downside is that you will never want to carry your autos again. |
You won't go wrong with a 4 inch 686, but I have a soft spot for a 5 inch 625.

I'm a huge fan of N-frame Smiths (especially if they're blued!!!) but if you want stainless go with the Smith 686. It's the pistol I'd have if I could only have one (and someone stole my 1911, of course). The .357 magnum on a medium frame is probably the most versatile pistol made; you can plink with .38's, go with a jacketed 125gr HP for self-defense, or load a 158-180 JSP for deer or black bear, or load with birdshot and kill gophers or snakes. My dad has one and absolutely loves it.
Or if you like .44 magnum, go with the 629. A 5" 629 is my next wheelgun purchase. The Ruger GP100 ain't bad either, but seems to lack the elegance of a Smith wheelgun. |

Everyone's mentioned great choices.
I've given Taurus revolvers a chance 4 times. They've been 50/50 on good ones and not so good ones. I've not owned or tried any S&W or Ruger that had any problems. |
Go with a Single Action Army Or perhaps a 1858 Remmy with a R& D conversion cylinder
As someone might have mentioned, the SW are great revolvers. Ruger makes some nice stainless DA's as well. But, hey, you are in my home state.......hard to beat a ruger SA.

S&W Model 19 - 357mag
S&W Model 629 - 44mag S&W Model 327 357 mag |

My only rovolver is a Taurus M85 that I got for 175. I will never sell it. |
The barrel and the cylander are angled downwards. Look at the frame just in front of the trigger guard, it slopes down. Also, the recoil from a .50 Beowulf will put a decent bruise on your shoulder after 10 rounds. That revolver is going to crack you right in the bean the first time you pull the trigger. |

Smith 686 or Ruger GP-100. There's a lot of Smith only folks out there. I was included until a few years back. A 4" GP-100 is a great gun. Not gay internal lock either.
S&W 686, unless you're like me and want to find one with fixed sights that is no longer made, get the 681. L-frame 6 shout .357. I've had my 681 for 12 years and have never needed the adjustable sights.

MT? What sate is that? |

+1 on the GP-100! I am very fond of mine. Get either a 4" or 6" (I wish I had chosen a 6" when I bought mine). |
