Yep,  He was a Marine Drill but was released on a medical discharge in the 70's.

Full Metal Jacket: He was originally a consultant for the film,  But he was so critical of the Actor D.S. and just scared the hell out of the actors so the directer cast him was the Drill instead.

Additional He's earned a gold record for the march rhymes he used for that movie.  And he even managed to up his rank even tho he was out of the military.  He was upgraded to Gunnery SGT for his continued support and promotion of the USMC.

The same thing everyone else calls him:  Gunny.  He isn't an officer, he is a Gunnery Sargent.

Sgt.  But I happen to think "sir" is an acceptable form of respectful address.

The Chair Force is scared $hitless of him. (This Navy vet would be if I met the man too!)

FMJ was his FOURTH film.  Our beloved Gunny has quite an acting resume behind him.

Nice piece on combat controllers.

I know a retired controller fully disabled now in wheelchair.  Great picture of him freefalling.  I think he has A.L.S.

Actually the actor that was slated to play Gunnery Sgt Hartman in the film FMJ was the guy in the helicopter scene.. "How do you shoot women and children?...Easy, you just don't lead them so much...". But he became ill and Ermy was moved from an advisory role to Hartmans role. The reat is history Private Pyle.
