The History Channel just ran a story about a battle between buffalo hunters and native Americans.

When the action paused, a native on a distant hill patted his butt, taunting the hunters.  A camp leader asked a crack hunter named Billy Dixon to take a shot at him.  He dropped the native with one shot from his .50-90 Sharps.   The rest of the natives were so amazed at the shot that they withdrew.

After the battle, the US Army measured the distance with a wagon odometer as 1,538 yards!

There were many tall tails of amazing shots in the 1800s but this one was scientifically confirmed as true.
