I guess you guys don't know how the power grid system works.

ditto what sniper1taz said, they key word is "grid"

anyway, i don't think it's too responsible to post a "how to" primer on terror on a public forum, whatever the context, and yes, i am a LEO too.

I seriously doubt this could ever be accomplished. I think that thousands of out of place, middle aged, middle eastern men milling about high power towers would probably get noticed, especially these days. Sure they might be able to blow up one here and there but it would be pretty futile as the damage would be minimal and they would be back up in a couple of days time.

They aren't trying to destroy our infrastructure, they only want to kill people. In any future attack you can bet that thousands more will die. It will be comming when we least expect it.

Nope, they dont.  Taking out one line would cause some disruptions on the wholesale level, but would be unnoticed on the retail/commercial.

It depends where you are. On the East coast, the major reaction is to loot. On the West coast we just get pissed off.

Around 1990 power was cut to the coastal resort/college/socialist city of Santa Cruz, California. The outage lasted a couple of days. Rumor was that a militant "environMENTAL" organization had taken out the power lines going to the area. The city sits on the Monterey Bay between the Ocean and the coastal mountains. There are only a couple of routes for power to get there.

Anyway, the only thing it did was piss people off. No rioting. No looting. Never became a recurring problem.

The rolling power outages--which weren't as bad as the rest of the country thinks--of 2000 and 2001 were more annoying than terrifying.

Be much more effective to do the substations.  Some are located in secluded areas.  One or two .50 cal rounds into the side of the transformers, and you achieve the same results.  More difficult to bypass also.

Note to FBI monitors...My name is not Achmed...

One more thing. With the Y2K scare most if not all critical facilities installed back up generators.

Hmmmm. A couple of guys I know may starve when their microwaves stop working...then again it'll just be a working demonstration of Darwinian theory.

Guys, the power grid loses lines almost everytime a major storm hits tornado alley.  Trust me, It would take so much cooridination, it would be impossible.  You may be able to take out a small (<40000 person) community, but that's it.  Remember, the power grid was built and operations planned by engineers, not by the government.
Taking out a small community would only last until they turned on local generation.  It is a waste of time for terrorists.
Even that scenario in Sneakers is totally impossible.

SHTF SENARIO#1  multiply terroists take out many main police radio towers.  (you can see them all over houston) and then some one RPG's the Hobby and Bush Intercontental airport towers!  MASS PANIC!!!

SHTF SENARIO#2 ist 50 mager cities at once walk in and start  all at the same time.  then blow themselves up.  both get us to have Mass Panic and martial law is insteaded.  thus the government takes away everyones guns for "homeland security"

A) Bush may be a liberal New Englander, but I don't think that anyone in his admin (except Powell) would support disarming the general populcae right now.
B) I don't think it would be as easy to recruit suicide bombers here. Even if you import 50 ragheads, once they get a look at all the goodies we have over here, I think they would be more likely to defect!

How many engineering schools have an Islamic Society? they have the ability to think up enough scenarios on their own. Maybe we should discuss what to look for?

As for irresponsibility, two of us reported a problem on 9-12 throught hte chain. We were told it would never happen as we have Palestianians , but we do have Saudis and others. Often as we go up the chain they start to lose the picture. BTW we are right the problem did happen.

It is up to the PEOPLE to start paying attention to what could happen, the government has only so much in resources. THe real resource in the U.S.A. is the people, and the government listening.

We are protecting Nuclear plants, what of resevoirs? Didn't they have something about suspicious activity at a resevoir outside of NYC? It was not the Police or military that reported it, it was an observant civilian.

THe news is covering the possibility of emergency vehicles being used by terrorists. DO we want a free society or a police state and our fate in the hands of the government?

I would rather that anyone trying to do harm to our coutry, to have to  think  "they are watching us?' rather than they are sheep, and they wait for the police to come.

We don't need riots, we don't need panics, we need the type of American that worked and fought in WW2, Civilians and military.

As  you know the police or military can not be everywhere. By Joe going to the store, might just see something, ifhe knows what to look for.

The Electric Grid in individual areas can be taken out by terrorists, taking out some of the towers would cause some trouble but would be relatively easy to replace. Now the substations are another thing, if they they were to be taken out we would be in deep doo doo. I read an article that stated that there are six substations and if they are taken out it would black out the entire North East. And even worse the power companies do not have enough spare parts to get them back on line the parts need to be custom made and are not kept in stock and are ordered as needed, and some of these parts have to be ordered from Germany. So if these substations were to be taken out by terrorists the North East would be without power for a long time. And these substations are not being guarded and are easy targets for terrorists.

We need the government to call out the Home Guard as was done during the First and Second World Wars, otherwise we are going to be in deep trouble.
