If you were in an elevator at the top of the building and the cable broke and it went into freefall. If you could see the bottom of the shaft coming up at you and you jumped a half second before the elevator impacted, would you be OK?

Le'me hear a your fly or no fly opinion in this response as well.

With two broken legs.
Mythbusters tried this and busted it. ETA: Beat by 17 seconds. Drat!

The fact that anyone has to rely on Mythbusters to figure this one out for them is pretty bad.

Seriously.

I mean, I didn't need Mythbusters to tell me that diet coke and pop rocks won't make you dead. I had my wife try it first.

Even if you jumped 2 secs before you hit the bottom, you're still moving 200mph downward. (well, 195 minus the jump)

Unless your legs could propel you upwards faster than the fall...you'd be d-e-d dead.

I am staying out of the airplane argument for now. I dont think it will fly - but I have the question out to a certified genius. Lets see what he says.

And my answer is, it will fly.

Wait a minute.  I thought elevators had a governor in them to limit the free-fall speed.

Anyway, how could you know exactly when to jump?

Obviously this one doesn't.

Because the OP said you can see the bottom of the shaft.
