So lets get this party started....Raw Milk is bad (for the general public)

FDA Debunks Raw Milk Myths

June is Dairy Month so the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reminding consumers about the importance of pasteurization and debunking raw milk myths. Raw milk is milk from cows, sheep or goats that has not been pasteurized or heated for a short period of time to kill harmful bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter and Listeria.

Even more troubling is that while making these unsupported claims, many raw milk enthusiasts deny the risks associated with drinking it.  Between 1993 and 2006, at least 1500 people became sick from drinking raw milk, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Many of them were children and teenagers who battled serious illness and endured lengthy hospital stays.

If you have a cow....and you take good care of it....and you handle the milk properly....then I have no problem with consuming milk that you are involved with from cow to glass. (Still some risk , though....but yours to take)

Buying/selling raw milk from/to a general market. That's udderly ridiculous and a big gamble to take.  Kinda like buying reloaded ammo from a guy you never met...it might work or it might land you in the hospital for a few days or worse.

The statistics you cite regarding the dangers of natural milk mean that out of a nation of 300,000,000 onlly 115 people on average get sick on it every year with no correlating data (like was the milk left unrefrigerated for several hours prior to consumption). You can google many examples of industrial food products making more than 115 Americans sick in a years time.

Meh, I'll take my chances. Been drinking it my entire life as have my parents, grandparents and all generations before them. Don't think my kids have ever had industrial diary milk products either (unless they had it through ice cream or cheese). Never been sick.

Edit to add:
In my life experience, any study or proclamation by a federal government agency represented by 3 letters should be assumed fraudulent and even if proved true, should still be suspect.

I can understand drinking it, if you have a cow handy, just for economic reasons.   But raw milked sold by a third party!? ..Nope!...............

Does it taste better? Yes, thick and creamy. Purchase mine every two weeks from a dairy that packages it in fresh containers. Half gallon or whole. Only my daughter and I drink it as my wife and son do not like it

my father has been legally selling it from his dairy farm for over 30 years with no problems, no one getting sick.  We always drank raw milk when I was growing up.  I don't see the problem people have with it.

Depends....on if you shake it up first (not homogenized so it separates) and what kind of cow it came from: Holsteins for volume, Guernsey's/Jersey's for butterfat.  and depending on where you live, springtime milk is gonna smell like onions.

I don't see why pasteurization and immunizations are such a big issue. With the massive influx of illegal aliens in this country, we'll have all sorts of diseases that this country isn't accustomed to. We'll have diseases that make food-borne and seasonal diseases look like the common cold. The future of Los Estados Unidos is looking bright.

My family owns a couple of dairy farms in Norway and they all pasteurize their own milk. If you ever saw what came off the cows teats you would think raw milk is just nasty too.

Disgusting.. I want my milk to smell like milk..

I have bought a few gallons of milk before that to me tasted like it had been filtered with a sweaty horse tail by a dog.

I drink about a gal of milk a day. This milk was off in a weird way but obviously not spoiled.

Was that "springtime" milk from a horse/dog/cow farm?

Cow....but it's pretty much all like that when spring arrives .  Ramps and wild onions grow quick....cows eat....milk takes on the smell.  It's diluted with milk from other farms in large silos , so its pretty much gone from the stuff you buy in the store.
Getting it directly from the cow/ farm...you get what that cow ate.

not even close, it's like drinking REAL MILK

it tastes better, it's better for you, it's not dangerous, it has more protein, it has like 4 times as much vitamins, it has probiotics in it that fight off harmful bacteria

everything else out there is processed and will fuck up your digestion compared to raw

I grew up on a dairy farm.  You are completely wrong.  Cows are dirty as fuck naturally.  How clean they are depends on how you take care of them.  The expense to sanitize raw milk cows would far outweigh the income from the milk.  So I can assure that even clean looking cows are not sanitized.  Maybe if the washed and brushed the cow before milking, then you could say it was cleaner than people.

Yes feces come from the butt.  The cow drops a big sloppy load while you are milking it.  Guess where the splatter goes, all over the udder.  Then is lays down in the feces and now has a feces covered udder.

I wasn't there with you, but I can assure you that those cows were cleaned right before you arrived.  I have raised plenty of cows, when they shit and piss, especially if they are sick, it will splatter.  Not only does it splatter but it gets thrown around by their tails.  A good amount gets on their utters.  Also they lay down to sleep.  When they sleep they don't go to a bed like the cartoon cows you grew up watching on cartoons.  They sleep in the barn which has shit on the ground or they sleep in a field with shit on the ground.  Also I don't know if your field trip to the farm one day included a night visit but very few cows sleep on their back which means their utters are utterly shitty.

If you like drinking it, knock yourself out.  Just don't be delusional about what you are drinking.

Like I have mentioned in all the raw milk threads take a glass, dip it into your toilet, and drink the water.  If you consider that clean then enjoy your raw milk.

I don't care if people drink raw milk.  That's your choice.  Just don't go around saying it is cleaner/safer than pasteurized milk because it is not.

It's already been explained.  Cows go to the bathroom whenever they want.  Even if cleaned they can still defecate before and during the milking process.  They can also defecate and then kick the milker off into the hot steaming pile of shit they just made.  Then you here this gargling sound as the vacuum from the milker sucks the shit into the milk line.  Yummy!

Try this experiment, dip a glass into your toilet, drink it, and see if you get sick.  I doubt you would get sick from that.  Of course you have to get past the mental block of knowing what goes in there and might be in there in order to drink it.  That is no different than raw milk, other than you haven't seen what can and does get into milk.

Part of the clean up process every night on the farm was removing the milk filter from inside the line.  Even on good nights, where the cows were clean and none kicked off the milkers, the filter would go in white and come out brown from the dirt.  Their would also be fecal matter, flies, straw...etc in the line.  Some nights were much worse than others and just removing the filter made me .

Because they're all fucking dead.

ETA: For the serious answer, it's not the most toxic substance on earth and if its a clean diary there really isn't a ton of it in there.  But it's just a silly thing to take a chance on, and if you do get sick it likely won't kill you but you will wish you were dead.

Sooo...because our government says it is wrong/bad that means they are right?  I am surprised to hear this from a gun forum...as right now the biggest campaign out there is AGAINST guns and how UNSAFE they are.

ps..I agree wholeheartedly that if you are going to be getting raw milk from someone, you should be aware of the conditions of the animals and the farm that it comes from....that is where the toxins are introduced if not properly cared for... getting it from "organic" farms is always best, as the animals have not been shot up with all kinds of hormones/antibiotics and they are not being fed all kinds of food...

Just don't be delusional about what you are drinking.

ok, if you believe they were cleaned before i arrived (which they probably were)

why would you think they wouldn't be cleaned before milking?

please explain

They are cleaned before milking.  I don't eat soup out of my toilet after I have clean it either.

It will only take one date with Campylobacter to change your mind.....here's a hint: buy a good mop.

I don't know why people always say this.  You do know most of that stuff has been banned from our food supply for decades.  Also as far as people on a gun board talking about raw milk, I don't think anyone wants it banned.  Drink what you want.

If there's so much shit in milk why would you drink it even pasteurized? A little fecal bacteria won't hurt you; it's everywhere. I don't know if I'd regularly buy raw milk but I resent the fact that the government won't let me make that choice myself.

I agree with this part.  There is no way I would drink it, but I can't understand why the government says I can't.  Warning labels, no problem, prohibition is another thing.  It's kind of like seatbelt laws, your a moron if you choose not to wear one, but you should be allowed to be a moron.  Hopefully Darwin wins the race before you get a chance to breed.
