There was a fire (thanks Japan) onboard his ship and two teams had failed to bring it under control. Ford volunteered to lead the third team down and they extinguished the fire and saved the ship. Typical of Ford he didn't brag about it. Nixon was also a naval officer during the war. I learned about it in Joe Foss (Medal of Honor, Marine Ace, former governor of SD, former president of the NRA) mentions it in his book. Including Kennedy, we had a lot of squids in the White House. |
