Bought the hype (oh, that lonely repair man) and shelled out $$ for a Maytag dryer 2.5 years ago. As of yesterday it will blow hot air but no longer tumble. That lonely repair man wants $135 to just come to our house and tell us what's wrong, then actually fixing it will be extra. I'm leaning towards just replacing it, unless...

Some expert here can tell me to take the back cover off and replace an $18 thingamajiggy and be good to go (and "thingamajiggy" is about as technical as I can stand).

Any hope?

Sounds like a broken drive belt. I replaced the drive motor in mine and have replaced the igniter twice in the years we have had it. At least try to disassemble it and fix it. At worst you have to throw out a disassembled dryer instead of one that is just broken.

Shoulda bought a smarter dryer.  Buying stuipid dryers isn't very intelligent.

Dr Fridge, calling Dr Fridge.  He'll be by soon.

Also, could be drive belt, but then again, that's what happened to our last.

If you are willing to write it off and get new then taking it apart and attempting to fix it will do no further harm.  Perhaps you can repair it yourself.  At the very least you will learn a bit more about it.

If you can hear the motor start up the you either have a broken drum belt or the tensioner broke. Either one is a cheap fix for YOU to do. Not cheap for someone else to do.

If you can't get ahold of Dr Fridge; and if you're fairly handy, try going down to the local bookstore and get a fix it book.  They are worth it's wieght in gold.  There is not much in those dryers, are not all that hard to fix.

Maytag got hit hard in the past few years, they almost went bankrupt before being bought by Whirlpool, and of course during that time, the quality of their machines went down hill as the company tried to save money.

BTW: Maytag laid off the Maytag repair man because of cost cutting.

Fix it yourself...like others have said..probably a broken belt.
Not that big of a deal to fix with a set of common hand tools.

+1 on the belt thingy

Just start taking it apart, pretty soon you'll figure out how it is supposed to work and what is preventing from working now. At best, you'll fix it yourself and learn a few things. Worst thing- you'll tear it all down, can't fix it, but it will be in pieces so it'll be easier on your back to carry it to the curb. What do you have to lose- it's broke! You can't make it any worse - it's already junk. Grab some tools and have at it!

Update: A $15 belt was all it needed. The inner workings of a dryer are surprisingly simple. Thanks, ARFCOM!

FYI,
I've found that most of the time when something like that happens it's usually a sock or a small piece of clothing that falls through and gets stuck in the drive belt. Just pop the front off and find it. Paid once to have a repairman come out years ago who told me that about 80% of the time that is usually the problem.
