I'm a 4Runner guy, I'll throw that out there.

Her budget is only about $10k - which hurts. Wanting a 2006-up reliable SUV, 4WD/AWD.

Keep finding Nissan Pathfinders, Honda Pilots, Rav4's, Ford Escapes, stuff like that in the price range. I don't know what will last for a while though that's already nearly a decade old. I'm not a huge Jeep guy so I've kind of ignored them, and there are used Jeeps absolutely everywhere.

Any advice on what I should be able to trust, and what to disregard?

Why is the budget so low?

Because that's what she can comfortably afford at the moment.

See if you can find an 05 or 06 Nissan Xterra. They are reliable, roomy, and really good in the snow.

Xterra is one she likes, ONLY one we've seen locally has a bunch of surface rust on it, and it was there when we were looking in the fall, so I'm assuming there's other issues with it we haven't seen.

Get a 4runner. Look for a 3rd gen limited with low miles or a 4th gen.

An older good SUV is better than a newer shit suv.

Yeah I'm damn happy with my 06 4Runner, not many used ones around. They get sold pretty damn quick. I'd love to find her an 08 Limited or something. I hate the new generation. Not sure what I'll do when I need a new one.

Gonna be pretty tough finding a nice used SUV for $10 grand.

Looking for a 4x4 SUV and only having a budget of 10 grand is a losing proposition .

What your friend is buying is repairs , lots of them...

She should be looking for a late model low mileage compact car
that would offer her years of trouble free service.

I sold my 01 4Runner Limited with 140K on it for $8500 about 3 years ago. It had every maint record since new, and was in perfect shape.

Guy who bought it is still driving it and hasn't had any problems out of it.

He can find one for $10K, he's just going to have to be patient and picky.

There are rules.

OP didn't follow them.

Look for a low mileage gen 2 CR-V.

You may still be able to find one or two with only 80k ish miles.

I have an 08, I feel the same about the new ones. Don't know what I will do either.

not happening.

We already had to do this in subnet's earlier thread. He had to settle for a 2wd ford escape.
