Both the Ruger and the Browning are good pistols, but in my experience, the Browning has a slight edge. For me, it shoots a little bit better and is a whole lot easier to clean. The only downside is that you need a screw driver to take it apart.

Love my Buck Mark.. I may be letting it go to fund a 22 dedicated upper..

i have owned rugers. been around forever. reliable and lots of goodies for them. i have even heard them called the 'generic .22 pistol'.
drawbacks are that they are a pain to fieldstrip. i have heard very good things about the buckmark, however, and have even 'allmost' bought one. everyone that i have talked to sez they are very accurate also. get whatever fires your rockets. they are both very good pistols. |

I've had the Ruger Mk 1 5 1/2" bull, since I was eighteen years old. That's twenty four years of good service. I haven't shot it every time I've gone to the range but it's initiated a whole bunch of folks to shooting, accounted for squirrels and proved you can hit something at 200 yards with a pistol a few times. If I ever lose it I'll get another Ruger.

Go 22-45 bull barrel w/adj sights in stainless.
Accurate, and a good companion to your 1911s. |

I have been thinking about getting a Ruger 45/22 myself for awhile now. It would come in handy when I run my coyote snare lines in the morning darkness before work during the winter. It would be easier for me to carry it instead of a .22 rifle.

It depends on what you want to use it for. I have a Wilson .22 conversion for my Colt 1991A1, and it's the .22 I take with me when I want to plink. I've got a Ruger Mk II, and a Bearcat, so I've got choices. There are conversion kits from Wilson, Ceiner, Colt, Kimber and others. If you want a target pistol, you get into customized Rugers, Walthers or Hammerlis.
I know it fuzzes up the choices, but that's my experience. Tachyon |

I would suggest the Mark II over the 22/45 for accuracy. If you want a .22 with the fit and feel of a .45, get a conversion kit for your 1911.

I have owned and shot the hell out of a Ruger MKII stainless with the 5 1/2 bull barrel. I have had this gun for over 15 years and have put over 20,000 rounds thru it. Most accurate handgun I own. The only drawbacks to it are it is a bitch to fieldstrip and are always running out of ammo cause it is so fun to shoot! Seriously, make sure you get one of those little gadgets that holds down the button when you reload the magazines, your fingers will thank you.

I've got a Ruger target in stainless and a Browning Varmint - the Buckmark with the ten inch bull barrel.
Out of the box the Browning shoots rings around the Ruger. I've spent about $100 on the Ruger's trigger assembly to bring it to the quality of the Browning. The Ruger is a real pain in the behind to clean too. They're both nice pistols but I just love the Browning. |

There's a kit that makes cleaning the Rugers a lot easier, but, it voids the warranty.
Can't think of the name of the mfg. right now. The Browning Buckmark is a nice pistol, but, GunTest magazine warned not to be "seduced" by the golden trigger. It apparently has some kind of bundle of snakes beneath the grip panels...if you disassemble it, coiled things begin to fly. It was not as reliable in the test as the Ruger. The Ruger was recommended as a better platform for starting. I still like the look of the Browning, though. |

I have a S&W Model 22A with 4 inch barrel. Ugly as heck but reliable and accurate. Whenever I have a new shooter with me, I start them out on this one. Much easier to clean than the Ruger. Have no experience with the Browning though.
