How about the Ruger 77/22 bolt rifle?
I think their basic blued models cost just over $300. |

I have a CZ 452 American (similar to this one, without the sights) that is an absolute tack driver.
I bought it slightly used for $290. New, they're about $329.00 A very well-built and handsome rifle.  |

Savage makes a good .22 bolt gun from what I hear, not as pretty, but a damn fine gun. Personally, I'd get a 10-22 and personalize it by hopping it up, and then giving it to your brother. It will be a cool project for you until it comes time to "gift" him YOUR gun.
It'll also be more accurate than an off the rack bolt gun. |

All of the above are good, but my favorite .22 bolt gun is an older Remington 581. You should be able to find one in the used gun rack. My nephew has mine now because I got into the 10/22 thing pretty heavy.
Also, I don't think you can ever go wrong with a Marlin. |

My Marlin .22 magnum is scary accurate. I zapped a barn swallow in the head with it from 95 yards away. That is accurate enough for me. |

If you can get away from the bolt, look at a 10/22. I've had one since I was a kid, along with bolt guns, and the Ruger is my favorite.

Marlin, Savage, Ruger, and CZ all make good shooting .22 bolt guns. The CZ has by far the best factory trigger of this group.

I have the bolt action Marlin. 25M I think is the model number. Paid about $150 I think. Darn is that thing accurate! Could use a little trigger work. But even stock it shoots better than I do. It has taken a few squirrels too.

I also have the CZ 452 American, and it is an outstanding rimfire rifle - mine will routinely shoot 1/2" groups at 50 yards with even most cheap ammo - and really shines with Federal Gold Match, PMC Scoremaster, or Wolf Target... Most of the time, I just shoot the $0.96/box Federal stuff at Wallyworld, and use it for precision shooting practice - I made some targets that are multiple spot(spots are penny sized) - set 'em out at 50 yards, and shoot 'em for groupings - great practice, cheap - and alot of fun... CZ also made a "Trainer" that was a 452, configured a bit different from the American - and they can sometimes be had for $200...

Too bad CMP ran out of the Mossberg M44's..........old as the hills bolt gun, but mine is extremely accurate. I can't remember how much they were.........60 or 70 bucks tops, but worth every penny.

get the Marlin. Black Synthetic stock, blue barrel. Has the little pipe under the barrell that holds 17 rounds too. So no magazines, no sore fingers and much more than one shot.
Long barrel - very accurate and well under $ 200. Save your other $100 + for a nice scope and rings. I have 2 of these - my favorite rifles! Good luck! |

I have one of these I am going to sell. (borrowed pic, I haven't taken any yet) I will IM price if interested. No scope, or with scope,-- I removed the sights for scope clearance. I haven't cut off the bosses yet, but planned to cut and re-crown the barrel, along with milling down the rear sight lugs. It will be under your price, shipped, with the scope, FYI. Yes, they are outstanding rifles, all steel, and extremely accurate. I did have two of them. I finally scored a CZ American with a varmint barrel, which is out being threaded. I will never be without a CZ. These are much sexier than a Ruger 10-22. /has two 10-22s, no bash.

I wish they were still that price. I paid $200 for it and would buy a few more in a heart beat! They still have the kimbers I believe. |

I would go with Marlin or Savage. My freind just bought a Ruger 77/22. He about through it away. said it would eject the cartridge right. I said send it back to Ruger.
