I sat on a buddies Duc the other day and was amazed at how high it sat and she was kind of heavy(maybe it was the way she sat,996).I've got an '89 GIXXER and she only weighs 426lbs(can't remember if that's wet or dry). Do these new sport-bikes weigh less than that,I find it hard to believe, what with water-cooled engines and all? I love the feel of old-school gixxers! the hand;ing is so intuitive, all you have to do is look where you want to go and she's there.  Just aim and shoot! By the way,I need some OEM grips, where to buy?

I have a Duc 999 and it is 425 dry (the 1098 is supposed to be lighter) If I recall correctly the one of the lightest is the Yamah R1 I think it is in the 380 range. I know the move away from the tube frames and using the engin as a stressted part of the design has caused some weight loss from a lot of the bikes

89 GSXR750? Suzuki claimed dry weight is 429, but the manufacturers always seem to be able to get the bikes 30-40 pounds lighter than anyone else can for dry weights, so you are probably close to 500lb curb weight.

If you like the handling of 80s GSXRs, have you ridden a 600 or 1000 race rep from the last 4 years? They are much lighter, thinner, smaller, vastly more powerful, and the difference in suspension, handling, and brakes is indescribable.

Here are some weights for current bikes. Manufacturer claim and magazine test dry weight in parenthesis.
Honda
CBR600RR 345 (385)
CBR1000RR 388 (425)
Suzuki
GSXR600 357 (410)
GSXR1000 379 (439)
Yamaha
R6 357 (394)
R1 390 (435)
Ducati
1098s 377 (410)

Well hell,I guess bikes have gotten lighter! I was thinking of buying an '05 R1. Nice-looking bike with good power and handling. It's either that or a truck! Bit I really need the truck.

Yes, newer bikes are much lighter and much more powerful.

And yes, the manufacturers lie their asses off when it comes to weight and horsepower numbers.

And just like Mr. 223, I lack the words to describe how much better the tires, brakes, and suspension are.

They even make my limited riding skills look good.

That is precisely why I bought my Duc.. it makes even a an old duffer like me feel likke he can ride, right up until I can't. The downside of all these improvements is unlike my old Kawasaki Triples the new ones don't let you know that you are at the edge of the envelope where the machine  can cover for the lack of skills. Then it is woops this is going to hurt me and my wallet.

The edge of the handling envelope of an H2 occurs sometime between putting the sidestand up and releasing the clutch all the way in first gear.

You can ride a new bike faster than you could ride an old H2, and do it using just your thumb and forefinger of your right hand.

Very true on both counts but the old H2 reminded you of how close to the edge you were. Being the self indulgent sort  I have a Turbo Busa and a 999 Duc either would shame the H2 but niehter offer the low speed thrills. Of course I am told getting shot at can be thrilling too

Get both
Maybe get a not as nice truck?

I really thought about doing just that. But my buddy is selling a beautiful 04 Tundra Limited and I really want it!
