All Metrocast users got an email with the new Acceptable Use Policy which begins on 1/01/11. If I'm reading this correctly........no porn, no dirty jokes, no more F-Obama

Example of things we are not allowed to do:
"post, store, transmit or distribute any information, data or material that a reasonable person could deem to be indecent, pornographic, harassing, threatening, vulgar, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive or otherwise inappropriate, regardless of whether such information, data or material or its distribution is unlawful;"

Link to new policy

I just sent an email to the address provided in the link. I'm not much of a writer (as you can tell by my post count) but we'll see if I still have a connection by Monday.

My email to Metrocast:

Could you explain this part of your policy in more detail and possibly in better English?

Prohibited Uses
You may not use the Service, any MetroCast equipment or any connected device to:

post, store, transmit or distribute any information, data or material that a reasonable person could deem to be indecent, pornographic, harassing, threatening, vulgar, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive or otherwise inappropriate, regardless of whether such information, data or material or its distribution is unlawful;

Who is this "reasonable person"? What is it that offends this "reasonable person"? Are we saying that a friend of mine can't use your service to email me a picture of boobies? Can I no longer refer to our president as The Incompetent Kenyan Mongrel Bastard in an email or internet posting? That could be seen as racist/hateful/ethnically offensive to some, and just plain obvious to most.

How about George Carlin's list of seven words you can't say on TV? Are we not allowed to post or email these using Metrocast service?

If I'm reading this policy correctly, you might be better off providing internet service to China.......oh wait......they already enforce similar rules.

Confused long time subscriber looking for answers, maybe I'm just reading this wrong.

Hopefully nothing in this email offended you, I'd hate to lose my service if the mysterious "reasonable person" is reading this.

God, Allah, Ganesh, Satan, Flying Spaghetti Monster and Science bless you, have a nice multicultural day but only if and when you chose to do so.

That's a bunch of mother-fucking horseshit - "regardless of whether it is unlawful?"  It's called CENSHORSHIP, BITCHES.   Sounds like you might even have a lawsuit, were it to come to that.  Not worth it monetarily, but it is not THEIR job to legislate YOUR morality - Jesus H, they get the pope write their mission statement?

Yes, it is a load of horse shit. Comcast also has a cap on bandwidth usage, also 250gb/month.

However, it is THEIR network, they own it, therefore they get to dictate how their network gets used.

This looks to be the only questionable part of the whole policy. And this run-on sentence has so many words that I have no idea what it means. The rest just seems to be "don't do anything illegal or fraudulent".

If it is correct by your interpretation, it is time for a new ISP.

.... a reasonable person could deem to be.....

You don't even need to read the rest of it, that little phrase makes the entire statement moot.

Sounds like a bunch of worthless CYA to me.  Ignore it.  Worst they can do is cancel your account.  In this economy, nobody is firing a profitable customer.

What is the basis for this comment?  A business telling its customers that it won't transmit information on taboo subjects is the FCCs fault?   Because the business wanted to get ahead of the FCC?  Or what?   This sounds like anti "net neutrality" based on squishy feel-good emotional issues to me.

ETA: I don't see any connection between the OP's issue and FCC actions.  OTOH, I see RichR implying some FCC connection to the OPs issue, but without any actual connecting facts/reports/discussion..  The major issue that the FCC is considering in regard to the internet is "net neutrality", at least as far as I am aware.

So, I have to assume that he is referring to that in his comments. His comments don't seem to support his assertion (that the FCC is somehow the reason for the change).

And that is when you find a new ISP.

It wouldn't surprise me if half of ARFcom is surfing under similar TOS right now.

My ISP blocks piratebay and every once in a while an image from an obscure location. If they block more, I don't know about it.

My TOS may or may not be as archaic (truthfully, I have no idea), but at the end of the day, it is about the service I get, not what a document claims.

Is Cable One or AT&T around? Both would be suitable substitutes without all the morality legislation.

I say you try to stream the most fucked up porn video imaginable, see if they will "ban you". Something like "midget trannies fuck quadriplegic chick with a beard while wearing clown make-up".

In that case, take any of those topics, like midgets, trannies, quadriplegic, bearded chick, and clowns, and put them into a porn tube search engine. lol

The 1A does NOT apply to private business.

Most ISPs have a bandwidth cap; whether or not people reach it is another thing. But don't get it twisted...every ISP I know will shut you off if you're using too much bandwidth (assuming it is not a business circuit).

But yea, fuck them, get a new ISP. Ridiculous.

And you all laughed at Franken and his push for net-neutrality.  Guess what?  Your ISP gets to determine at what speed that packet of info makes it to your computer if it makes it there at all.  I can't wait to watch the butthurt around here when Comcast/NBC gets what they want.  i.e. MSNBC.com traffic gets top priority while all NewsCorp holdings get relegated to the slow lane.
