In the movie "The Lost Battalion", Lt. Leak (Jay Roden) refers to "Hardtack and Iron Rations." Obviously those are food supplies of some type, but just what are they?

Alaskans consume a lot of pilot bread. There was an article in the local paper about how Alaska is 80% or 90% of the pilot bread market. It's a staple of natives and other people who live out in the Bush. I've heard that Eskimos like to spread Crisco on them.

Well, my wife and daughter are off visiting the grandparents right now so I don't have a whole lot else to do... I tried the traditional "Army Recipe" first. It's pretty salty, and I think I'll throw it into the chicken stew I made from scratch this afternoon. I'll try the "simple recipe" next. Yes, I'm pretty bored without the family.
