The button needs to be replaced, and the transformer needs replaced.
If you know what the transformer looks like, you can probably handle the screw driver and wiring. |

My doorbell chime housing started to melt and smoke, and almost caught fire from the button being stuck on. Fix it. soon.

Take apart the original door bell button and hold the 2 wires. Then press those 2 wires together and see if the bell rings as normal. If so, probably just need a new button and a no soliciting sign. |

I fixed mine (button dry rotted and would get stuck when pressed) and went with an all metal button so that this wouldn't happen again. Cost about $25 for a nice button.

We just moved into a house with a door bell that doesn't work. As soon as I figure out how to get the old crusty box off the wall, I'll be replacing the unit. Almost everything else in the house was updated, but they left to oldest POS door bell. Don't get it at all.
