make sure the wife has a firearm she is competant with. Make sure she understands situational awareness. Took me awhile but mona is up to speed and frankly i'd trust her over most people i know.

Be prepared for the worse at all times, + 1 on the wife being armed , even if its just pepper spray and be aware of your surrondings, do a room to room check when you enter your house , and be fucking careful

Get motion sensing floodlights and a dog. Defense outside should begin with non lethal force ie pepper spray and escalate to baseball bat. Since you ran your mouth to the local police, that's about all you have left. Running around outside your house with a locked and loaded AR when all of the neighbors are on edge is asking for trouble! What would you have done if one of them had challenged you in the dark? This was a cheap lesson-learn from it!

Yeah I hear ya...I didn't mention the fact that I had an AR or a 1911....I just said that it'd be a shame if I caught them...I did say that I was going to suit outside, and pepper them with my buddies paintball gun, and he laughed and told me to video tape that.....
I agree that my wife needs to become aware, I've been trying to get her to go to the range...hopefully this will be a good reason to go now... |

+1 on the flood lights! Yeah it wasn't the brightest thing to do, but well.... I do have 2 rather large dogs which went berserk when the bell rang....We think they may have been testing to see if we had dogs.... I wasn't dumb enough to mention the firearms, and I know the neighbors didn't see me, but now that I reflect on it is wasn't smart.... |

Don't allow your self to be so comfortable in your lair that you become complacent. I am always armed at home as I am everywhere else. GLOCK 19 on my hip with a spare mag on the other. I also keep a 16" AR built for home defense loaded and nearby, and have at least one weapon stashed in a secure, concealed, yet accessable location in each room of my place.

It is easy to freak when people mess with you and your family so make plans and be alert but don't let it take your edge . Try to go on with normal lives unless this is a neighborhood problem that is not going away if this is the case than time to move away or move on whichever is more viable ! This is a situation that you will eventually get through be rational you know Cells with 911 on speed dial . Just don't make a situation where anything that moves is a target .

I leave my TV on real loud when I leave my house.
Could you put a maniquin or blowup doll in your vehicle at night? That would make them think twice. Or you could do like I've posted here before. Leave a boombox fixed up special for them to steal.

Good idea. In Los Angeles, I read in the LA Times a few years back that a family was involved in a home invasion robbery, the people were fortunate no famly members were hurt, but the people who live there now has firearm that is accessible from anywhere in the room in each of their rooms on a moments notice. |

Lesson zero.
NEVER LEAVE ANYTHING AT ALL IN YOUR CAR. Certainly not in a car without an alarm. Certainly not a purse, wallet, bank deposit bag, or large bundles of cash in rubberbands. Certainly not parked outside. Even in Minnesota  I've known people who have had their cars broken into by punks to steal a handful of CD's, or a backpack full of books. I've also had a kid working for me lose $2500 worth of CD's from a huge album he left sitting out in the open. Leave nothing in there. |

 I knew a guy who did that once. After having stuff stolen from his garage twice in a month, he took an old TV that didn't work and sunk double edge razor blades into the carry hanbles. It took about three days before some shit head tried to take it. TV was dropped in the floor and there were bolld drops leading all the way down the driveway. I fucking hate thieves. |

Well that just sucks for ya man. But you could always get a few buddies to come over (make sure their big guys) and have them wear black shirts that say sherrif or somthing similar on the back with bdu pants and boots. Yall just get togather once or twice a week and BBQ and shoot the shit, so to speak. Make a scene just not a bad one and no one will be the wiser.
+1 for the floodlights and +1 for the guard dog and arming the wife. Course you could always get some NVG's and do a little observing of your own. Dont be afraid to confront these little shitheads but get some good footage via digital camera of them casing the area. These guys arn't half as good as they think they are. And thats how they get caught. Just remember if you catch them dont hurt them. Just tie them up and force them to watch the teletubbies and richard simmons videos till dawn while you drink strait jack from the bottle in your underwear laughing like your psyco. Take them on a mind trip they will never forget. They wont be back, I can assure you of this. And if they do hire some xmil personel to work your property at night. I'm in rochester hills...this type of thing normally doesn't happen, there is a real shady character that lives next door, and weird traffic in, and out of there house..could have been them....Thanks for the offer I'll definately keep that in mind |

Yeah, I realize it wasn't the brightest thing to do, but when my little ones are involved there's nothing I wont do! The saddest part was finding my sons diaper bag 2 yards over with it's contents laying around it....it kind of hit me like the shoe that goes flying when a little one gets hit..or snatched....Saddning! |

From a woman in somewhat the same situation... encourage your wife very strongly to consider learning how to handle firearms.
Our thieves have gone from car thefts this spring to house thefts this fall. Breaking in during the day when no one is home. We had our cars hit this spring and the house was a target this fall. With my children home alone! We have motion lights and it didn't scare them off. We also have an ADT security system and the stickers did not scare them off. I have increased my range time, keep my kimber on my side or in reaching distance. You can never be to safe. Another word of advice, don't rely on the police. It took them between 5-10 minutes to reach my house when my kids were home alone. We live in the city, not out in the boonies. Those 5-10 minutes were the scariest in my life since I wasn't there and I didn't know until dispatch called me on my cell phone that the officers had arrived. I am not bashing police, I am just saying, they can't be everywhere. |

That is my fear that they will try the house when were not home...I have 2 100lb dogs I just hope they don't welcome them with open arms (2 big softies)
I normally sleep with my .45 under the pillow, and I sleep very softly......I guess I need to sleep in the cars or on the porch for a few nights... |

Security is sucha complicated issue: you can't be everywhere, and no matter what you do yo can't completely prevent problems like this unless you live in Fort Knox.
The usual layered defense works well. Think like a thief. A well trained monkey is a little bit smarter, so get creative when assessing your AO. Remember, most want cash or things easily converted to cash, or maybe they'll take the cool looking toys. First is prevention: remove tempting targets of opportunity for the lazy thief. Don't leave good stuff out and/or visible. Your car is just a big tin can with a little bit of glass to show them what's inside and invite them in. Second, secure the premises: Lock ALL doors and windows at night or when gone. Lock up the things you can't stand to lose. This includes car/house/shed, and the kids toys, etc. Sad, but necessary these days. Guns are VERY tempting and lucrative to steal. If they know you have guns, they WILL go the extra mile to get into the house. Don't flash them around, don't leave the garage door up when you're cleaning them, don't walk around with them in cases, don't plaster your car/truck with gun stickers, and so on. These days, all you're doing is advertising. Get a safe and use it. Get a safe and use it. Get a safe and use it. Get a safe and use it. Did I say" "Get a safe and use it." yet? Personal protection and safety is another issue, and everyone needs to be aware and have plans. Neighborhood watch type groups are great for getting to know your neighbors and developing mutual aid. That nosy old-lady downthe street may be just the one to call the cops when the, uh, "disadvantaged yout" strolls down the street with your TV. I"m sure you can find out more. Think like a scumbag, you'll figure it out. BTW, I think these kinds of break-ins can be the beginning of worse stuff, or they can just be a single incident of opportunity. I'd keep an eye on that sleazy neighbor- most dumb dickwads don't go very far to steal for their habits. If they were any smarter, they would be stealing in *other people's* neighborhoods, or wouldn't be stealing little things at all. They'd be politicians. Good luck! |

Dude, what the heck? My friend lives in Rochester Hills. It's a nice area! I shouldn't be surprised-- I have family in Shelby Township, a nicer area, and they frequently have problems with carjacking and robberies. Hope it clears up and the cops bag the guy. I haven't seen anything on TV about it. |

Thats for the advice everyone.....Macman, it was a nice neighborhood 3 years ago, but since the corner began populating with less that desirable storefronts it's become worse...I highly doubt you'll see anything on the news about it..Heck the officer this morning was acting like it was my fault...
Unfortunately the $$ safe, but I'm trying to save (one income soon) I was just thinking about what to do, and I'm just frustrated! Thanks again! |

Why'd your wife leave her purse in the car? Even at home? I don't leave my wallet in the car (yes, sometimes I take it out of my pocket.. it's a ass-sore on longer trips).
No matter HOW secure I feel at home, I do not leave valuables in the car. I always lock the car. I always lock my door when I go in my apartment. Do not become complacent at home. |

It was a realyl hectic day on saturday....she had both kids 3 and 2, and a butt load of stuff to unload, plus it started raining...I had been at my rental all flippin day installing a garbage disposal, and ran right home jumped out of the car,a nd began cutting the grass before the rain...One thing led to another and before you knew it we'd forgot....
Funny thing was I was actually going to sit outside on the porch all night waiting for the Bush sign stealers to try taking my sign again...but I never was able to procure another sign... |

I'd love to think that it was an isolated incident, but twice.....I'm just sooooo frustrated that my only options are to make sure the cars are locked, install lights, get bigger dogs...etc!!
I'd like to sit outside, or sleep in the vehicle and beta the ever loving daylights out of them if he/she/they do come back, but with the way everyone is lawsuit happy these days my luck is they'd sue me... |
