I had a run in with the JBT's, but first the background it started when I got called for Jury duty, I call and reschedule, and they tell me the new date and time, and sent a new summons, well they got the date right, but not the time they told me on the phone, I can only reschedule once so now I'm stuck with it, so now I have to drive in to Mogadishu, err I mean Detroit, at 7:00 in the morning to be to the court house by 7:45, now I am usually sleeping this time of day I'm awake all night and usually sleep till the afternoon, so I was going on about 2, and a half, to 3 hours sleep at the most.... So I get to drive through a few burned out, dilapidated neighborhoods, and go through the perpetual freeway construction to get to the court house, I go in and get a very rude gourd who has me empty my pockets to go through the metal detectors, so I pour about $3.50 in loose change into the tray and go through the metal detectors which of course beep anyway, so I get to stand in the lobby and get wanded, my buttons had apparently set off the detector, and I had missed a quarter, and apparently my shirt must be metallic, so after being searched I get my stuff out of the tray, and go to the jury assembly room, where I then have to fill out a form with simply asks for my race, and gender because they apparently could not tell by looking at me, so I fill it out, and hand it back to them so I go and sit, after awhile a video comes on telling us about the glory of Jury duty, and telling us how a trial works, then they get on the P.A., and tell us that during breaks, or lunch if we wanted to eat we would have to go outside walk down the street, and find a restaurant, or go to the Casino, but we had better be back on time, and we wouldn't receive our $25.00, plus .10 cents a mile for at least 3 weeks, so then I sit there till 8:00 when they announce a break till 8:30, I only had about $3.50 so I just sat there, and even if I had money by the time I walked to get something to eat and walk back the break would be over, so then at 8:25 they announced that break was over, 5 minutes early so it's good I didn't go anywhere, shortly after that they put on a movie for us to watch it was your typical Liberal Propaganda piece, Republicans are EVIL, guns are EVIL, I think it was called The American President, basically it was 1994 Clinton was in office, the Democrats controlled the House, and Senate, and the Lewinski affair was perfectly acceptable, actually it was supposed to be modern day the president was named Maxwell as I recall, and was balancing dating an environmentalist activist with destroying the second amendment, and industry, but you could tell what they were really trying to say, every 10 minutes was an attack on guns, and or republicans, great movie to show if there was a gun case, no that won't bias the Jury.... So then it's 10:00, and they call another break, I keep sitting there, stuck watching propaganda, then about 10:25, to 10:30 they turn off the movie and say they only have one more case and will call 24 people, and the other 100 can go home, I'm one of the 100 that gets to go home and I had just wasted the last 2 hours and 45 minutes to 3 hours for nothing, but first I had to use the pay phone to call my ride, so I walk to the phone and the coin slot is jammed, so I go to the other phone, but someone has beaten me to it, and they don't know how to work the phone, so I wait for them to figure it out, and finnish there conversation, so then I get on the phone, and it craps out, and spits my change back out, so I try again but then I get a computer that says "this number is no longer in service, please try again later", so I'm thinking WTF I LIVE THERE!!!!, so I figure it's an error, and try again, and drop my change all over the floor, so after I got my change back I try again, and get the same message, so I figured OK maybe I have to add the area code to (I live in the same area code as the court house that's why I didn't do that in the first place....), then I get "Please hold while we process your call.......................Please hold while we process your call.......................Were sorry the number you have dialed is no longer in service, please try again later.... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!SCREW IT!!!!, so I go try the phones in the lobby, same thing.... So I figure there's something up with the line I'll try again later, so I go outside to wait, and I stand there, pace around, chase the pigeons, pace some more, sit on the ledge, and since there's no clock I use a street sign that said no standing no parking, this lane must turn left as a sun dial, the shadow moves to what I figure is probably about 11:30 or so, I sit some more then pace around, and ask someone I see with a watch, he tells me 11:25, my sun dial skills must be pretty good I tell myself, and I go sit some more, then get up, and try again, and again get "this number is no longer in service please try again later", try it with the area code and get "Please hold while we process your call......................Please hold while we process your call........................Were sorry the number you have dialed is no longer in service, please try again later".... THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS!!!!, so I pace some more until my street sign sun dial tells me it's about 12:15 so I try again, same thing, try it with the area code, drop my change, try again same thing DAMN IT, DAMN IT, DAMN IT, DAMN IT, DAMN IT!!!!, so I pace around some more, then just stand there and watch the sun dial, I came to the conclusion that if you watch it close enough you can actually see the shadow move along the ground, and now what you've been waiting for a Sheriffs car pulls up, in front of me, and stops, I don't think anything of it because I'm standing in front of the courthouse, there's at least 4 or 5 cops walking around behind me, and a police car passes about once or twice a minute, so I watch as two Overweight Black Sheriffs deputies with shaved heads step out of the car, they each have a drop leg holster, and several pounds of tactical "bling" strapped to there bodies, and my first thought when I saw them was mall ninjas, these two looked like extras from Black Hawk Down, but then one of them says come down here, I'm just standing there minding my own business, so I figured they must be talking to someone else, but there's no-one else standing near me so I ask "Me?", and then he says "come down here we want to talk to you", so I'm thinking what the hell do they want to talk to me for I'm not doing anything, am I not supposed to be standing on the grass there's no signs and other people are doing it?, that's the only thing I can think of, but I walk down there, thinking great I'm going to get a ticket, so I ask them what's this about?, they won't answer, "Are you feeling alright today?" Yes I said "Do you have any ID?" he asks yes I say, and go to take out my wallet "Don't go near your pockets" he says forcefully, as he reaches into my pocket, pulls out my wallet, and drops one of my dimes in the gutter, and takes out my license, "What's this about?" I ask again they again refuse to answer, they then start to frisk me "What's in this pocket?" the other one asks just papers I say, and point towards the pocket, "Don't go near your pockets" they demanded again, they open the door and tell me to get in, "What's this about?" I ask again, "Don't worry about it" is all they said, I sit it the car, there is literally only about 1 or 2 inches clearance between the steel divider, and the back seat, my legs of course do not fit, "get in" they say again, so I have to drag my feet up onto the seat by hand since my legs don't bend side ways, and they shut the door, all this was in front of dozens of people and cops, now bear in mind I was standing in front of the courthouse there are about 4 or 5 uniformed cops behind me, more inside, the Sheriffs station is right next door, there's a police or Sheriffs car that passes right by me maybe once or twice a minute, and I was just standing there if I was a criminal is that the place I would hide?, so then they start to drive, "What's your business at the courthouse today?" he asks, Jury duty I say, he gets a look of panic in his face "are you out now?", he asked, Yes I say "Where's your sticker?" he demanded, crumpled up in my pocket I say, again I ask "what's this about?", "You match a description from a Citizen complaint" he says, I was just standing there I said, "Waiting for I ride?" he asks, yes I say, but I'm having some problems with the phone I'm waiting to call again later "What?" he asks I repeat myself " I'm having problems with the phone I have to wait to call again later", then I ask "Who, and what am I supposed to have done?", no answer, I wait a few seconds and ask again, "Who, and what am I supposed to have done?", "We can't tell you that, it's private" he said, then they start radioing in my information in, and park, I wait till there through then say "I'd like to get back in case he shows up", "Were almost done" he says, then we sit there for about a minute when the other one says "We have to Check these out", "Go around the corner so he can get out I hear one say to the other" I have no idea if they mean out into the Sheriffs station were I will sit for a few hours, and maybe be brought up on false charges, or back out onto the street then they drove back around the corner, then he mumbled under his breath "sorry for the inconvenience", then got out, and opened my door, I climbed out, and he handed me my wallet, and drivers license, then gets back in the car and they drive off, I'm standing on the side of the court house, and get to walk through the same crowd that just say me driven off in the Sheriffs car, I try not to look at any of them, and go back to where I was standing, then eventually sit, and watch the shadow some more.... Now I understand that they have to check out every complaint, and I'm willing to go talk to them but what I don't appreciate, and where they were out of line is I didn't do anything, and last I checked I'm supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, and I don't like being treated like a criminal, being frisked, just about being drawn down on by a couple of tactical SEAL, Ranger, Force Recon, Uber I33T, Super Sniper, Space Shuttle Door Gunners, for just glancing at my pockets, being publicly driven off in a Sheriffs Car, all without due cause, and not being told the charges of which I was accused, personally I think there was no complaint, I just had the nerve to dare to be White in Detroit.... So I sit there until the shadows at about 1:00, then go to try the phone again, and again drop my change now with .10 cents less, I pick it up, and try again, and again it said the number was no longer in service SON OF A F*@&!NG B*%#H!!!!, so then I decide on a long shot to try the pay phone across the street, and got not surprisingly "This number is no longer in service, please try again later, "of course" I say to my self, then I try it with the area code "Please hold while we process your call.........................Please hold while we proxies your call........................Ring YES, FINALLY!!!!, this phone was like 50 feet from where I had been standing, right across the street in plane sight the whole time, and I could have used it at any time, it turns out the phones at the court house just don't work right, of all the irony...., so I call my ride, I go pace around some more, chase the pigeons again, wandered around again, then sat down and watched the shadow some more, then stood up and waited, then finally my ride got there, by this time I was starving, I was tired, I had a headache, and I was hot, we got some Arbys on the way back, I ate, had some Aleve, and went to bed....

OK, I decided I'd go ahead and read that mess anyway.

Let's just make some cliff notes for anyone who is less daring and bored than me.

You went to jury duty and weren't selected. You tried to call your ride, at your house, but kept getting an error message. You went out in front of the court house. You alternated between obscessing about a pocket full of change, chasing pigeons and staring at a street sign for hours on end. The police came and ran your name. They drove you around the block while doing so. They let you back out. They apologized for keeping you for five minutes...then let you get back to obscessing about a lost DIME....chasing pigeons and staring at a street sign for another hour or two. Then you remembered to dial the area code in front of your home number, stopped getting the error message, got through and went home.

Sounds perfectly normal to me. If you're a high strung mental patient with OCD, that happens to be high on crack and out on a day pass.

Link Posted: 8/20/2005 2:28:43 AM EDT
I was dialing the area code the whole time it went like this diel number, get error message, try again with area code get, annother error message, the pigions part was more like walking after them slowly, and watching them walk away out of sheer bordem, and was only added to the story for comic relief as it is long, and to emphesise just how bored out of my mind I was....

I've noticed that those who write very well rarely have much of importance to say. This guy was minding his own business, standing on a street in America, performing his civic duty as required by law and was detained, searched, intimidated and threatened by armed paramilitary dressed and equipped soldiers based on racial profiling because he was white. They had no respect for his rights as an American citizen. He also was forced to watch propaganda against his will. Solzhenitsyn wrote very well from the gulag. He had no rights or freedom. I wonder what the first draft of the constitution looked like. Would you have tossed it for grammar?
Link Posted: 8/20/2005 3:31:18 AM EDT
should have told them "I think the judge is going to be grumpy" when asked if you were out

That was funny. Sorry about you luck tho.

Last time that happened to me on a pay phone I called the operator and had here handle my call. Dont know if they still have operators.

Damn I can't believe I read that. It's kinda entertaining, sorry 'bout your day man.
-----------------------------------------

I had a run in with the JBT's, but first the background it started when I got called for Jury duty. I call to reschedule, they tell me the new date and time and sent a new summons. Well they got the date right, but not the time they told me on the phone. I can only reschedule once so now I'm stuck with it I have to drive to Mogadishu, err I mean Detroit, at 7:00 in the morning to be at the court house by 7:45. I am usually sleeping this time of day I'm awake all night and usually sleep till the afternoon, so I was going on about 2, and a half, to 3 hours sleep at the most....

So I get to drive through a few burned out, dilapidated neighborhoods, and go through the perpetual freeway construction to get to the court house. I go in and get a very rude guard who has me empty my pockets to go through the metal detectors. I pour about $3.50 in loose change into the tray and go through the metal detectors, which of course beep anyway, so I get to stand in the lobby and get wanded. My buttons had apparently set off the detector and I had missed a quarter and apparently my shirt must be metallic. So after being searched I get my stuff out of the tray and go to the jury assembly room where I then have to fill out a form, which simply asks for my race and gender because they apparently could not tell by looking at me. So I fill it out, hand it back to them, then I go and sit.

After a while a video comes on telling us about the glory of Jury duty and telling us how a trial works. Then they get on the P.A. and tell us that during breaks or lunch if we wanted to eat we would have to go outside walk down the street and find a restaurant or go to the Casino, but we had better be back on time or we wouldn't receive our $25.00 plus .10 cents a mile for at least 3 weeks. So then I sit there till 8:00 when they announce a break till 8:30, I only had about $3.50 so I just sat there and even if I had money by the time I walked to get something to eat and walk back the break would be over. Then at 8:25 they announced that break was over, 5 minutes early, so it's good I didn't go anywhere.

Shortly after that they put on a movie for us to watch it was your typical Liberal Propaganda piece, Republicans are EVIL, guns are EVIL. I think it was called The American President, basically it was 1994 Clinton was in office, the Democrats controlled the House, and Senate, and the Lewinski affair was perfectly acceptable. Actually it was supposed to be modern day, the president was named Maxwell as I recall, and was balancing dating an environmentalist activist with destroying the second amendment, and industry. You could tell what they were really trying to say, every 10 minutes was an attack on guns, and or republicans, great movie to show if there was a gun case, no that won't bias the Jury....

Then it's 10:00, and they call another break, I keep sitting there, stuck watching propaganda. About 10:25, to 10:30 they turn off the movie and say they only have one more case and will call 24 people and the other 100 can go home. I'm one of the 100 that gets to go home and I had just wasted the last 2 hours and 45 minutes to 3 hours for nothing.

First I had to use the pay phone to call my ride, so I walk to the phone and the coin slot is jammed so I go to the other phone, but someone has beaten me to it and they don't know how to work the phone. So I wait for them to figure it out and finish thier conversation, then I get on the phone and it craps out and spits my change back out. So I try again, but then I get a computer that says "this number is no longer in service, please try again later". I'm thinking WTF I LIVE THERE!!!! so I figure it's an error and try again and drop my change all over the floor. After I got my change back I try again and get the same message so I figured OK maybe I have to add the area code too (I live in the same area code as the court house that's why I didn't do that in the first place....) then I get "Please hold while we process your call.......................Please hold while we process your call.......................Were sorry the number you have dialed is no longer in service, please try again later.... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!SCREW IT!!!!.

So I go try the phones in the lobby, same thing.... I figure there's something up with the line I'll try again later so I go outside to wait. I stand there, pace around, chase the pigeons, pace some more, sit on the ledge, and since there's no clock I use a street sign that said no standing no parking, this lane must turn left as a sun dial. The shadow moves to what I figure is probably about 11:30 or so. I sit some more then pace around and ask someone I see with a watch, he tells me 11:25, my sun dial skills must be pretty good I tell myself, and I go sit some more, then get up, and try again, and again get "this number is no longer in service please try again later", try it with the area code and get "Please hold while we process your call......................Please hold while we process your call........................Were sorry the number you have dialed is no longer in service, please try again later".... THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS!!!!

So I pace some more until my street sign sun dial tells me it's about 12:15 so I try again, same thing, try it with the area code, drop my change, try again same thing DAMN IT, DAMN IT, DAMN IT, DAMN IT, DAMN IT!!!! So I pace around some more, then just stand there and watch the sun dial, I came to the conclusion that if you watch it close enough you can actually see the shadow move along the ground, and now what you've been waiting for a Sheriffs car pulls up in front of me and stops. I don't think anything of it because I'm standing in front of the courthouse, there's at least 4 or 5 cops walking around behind me and a police car passes about once or twice a minute. So I watch as two Overweight Black Sheriffs deputies with shaved heads step out of the car, they each have a drop leg holster, and several pounds of tactical "bling" strapped to there bodies. My first thought when I saw them was mall ninjas, these two looked like extras from Black Hawk Down, but then one of them says come down here. I'm just standing there minding my own business, so I figured they must be talking to someone else, but there's no-one else standing near me so I ask
"Me?",
and then he says "come down here we want to talk to you".
So I'm thinking what the hell do they want to talk to me for I'm not doing anything, am I not supposed to be standing on the grass there's no signs and other people are doing it?, that's the only thing I can think of, but I walk down there, thinking great I'm going to get a ticket, so I ask them what's this about?
They won't answer,
"Are you feeling alright today?"
Yes I said
"Do you have any ID?" he asks
yes I say and go to take out my wallet
"Don't go near your pockets" he says forcefully, as he reaches into my pocket, pulls out my wallet, and drops one of my dimes in the gutter, and takes out my license,
"What's this about?" I ask again they again refuse to answer, they then start to frisk me
"What's in this pocket?" the other one asks
just papers I say, and point towards the pocket,
"Don't go near your pockets" they demanded again, they open the door and tell me to get in,
"What's this about?" I ask again,
"Don't worry about it" is all they said, I sit it the car, there is literally only about 1 or 2 inches clearance between the steel divider, and the back seat, my legs of course do not fit,
"get in" they say again, so I have to drag my feet up onto the seat by hand since my legs don't bend side ways, and they shut the door, all this was in front of dozens of people and cops, now bear in mind I was standing in front of the courthouse there are about 4 or 5 uniformed cops behind me, more inside, the Sheriffs station is right next door, there's a police or Sheriffs car that passes right by me maybe once or twice a minute, and I was just standing there if I was a criminal is that the place I would hide?,
so then they start to drive, "What's your business at the courthouse today?" he asks,
Jury duty I say, he gets a look of panic in his face "are you out now?", he asked,
Yes I say "Where's your sticker?" he demanded, crumpled up in my pocket I say,
again I ask "what's this about?",
"You match a description from a Citizen complaint" he says,
I was just standing there I said,
"Waiting for I ride?" he asks,
yes I say, but I'm having some problems with the phone I'm waiting to call again later
"What?" he asks
I repeat myself " I'm having problems with the phone I have to wait to call again later",
then I ask "Who, and what am I supposed to have done?", no answer, I wait a few seconds and ask again, "Who, and what am I supposed to have done?",
"We can't tell you that, it's private" he said, then they start radioing in my information in, and park,
I wait till there through then say "I'd like to get back in case he shows up",
"Were almost done" he says, then we sit there for about a minute when the other one says "We have to Check these out",
"Go around the corner so he can get out I hear one say to the other" I have no idea if they mean out into the Sheriffs station were I will sit for a few hours, and maybe be brought up on false charges, or back out onto the street
then they drove back around the corner, then he mumbled under his breath "sorry for the inconvenience", then got out, and opened my door, I climbed out, and he handed me my wallet, and drivers license, then gets back in the car and they drive off, I'm standing on the side of the court house, and get to walk through the same crowd that just saw me driven off in the Sheriffs car, I try not to look at any of them, and go back to where I was standing, then eventually sit, and watch the shadow some more....

Now I understand that they have to check out every complaint, and I'm willing to go talk to them but what I don't appreciate, and where they were out of line is I didn't do anything. Last I checked I'm supposed to be innocent until proven guilty and I don't like being treated like a criminal, being frisked, just about being drawn down on by a couple of tactical SEAL, Ranger, Force Recon, Uber I33T, Super Sniper, Space Shuttle Door Gunners, for just glancing at my pockets, being publicly driven off in a Sheriffs Car, all without due cause, and not being told the charges of which I was accused,

Personally I think there was no complaint, I just had the nerve to dare to be White in Detroit.... So I sit there until the shadows at about 1:00, then go to try the phone again, and again drop my change now with .10 cents less, I pick it up, and try again, and again it said the number was no longer in service SON OF A F*@&!NG B*%#H!!!!, so then I decide on a long shot to try the pay phone across the street, and got not surprisingly "This number is no longer in service, please try again later, "of course" I say to my self, then I try it with the area code "Please hold while we process your call.........................Please hold while we proxies your call........................Ring YES, FINALLY!!!!

This phone was like 50 feet from where I had been standing, right across the street in plain sight the whole time and I could have used it at any time, it turns out the phones at the court house just don't work right, of all the irony...., so I call my ride, I go pace around some more, chase the pigeons again, wandered around again, then sat down and watched the shadow some more, then stood up and waited, then finally my ride got there, by this time I was starving, I was tired, I had a headache, and I was hot, we got some Arbys on the way back, I ate, had some Aleve, and went to bed....

I read it. Gramer/spellin Notzies be dammed.

That is all too typical of New Falujha/Mogodishu/Detoilet.

The worst racism I've ever encountered was there. Georgia, Mississippi & Alabama are play grounds compared to the BS I've put up with in that festering mount of coruption. Hastling people is considered sport in southeast Michigan.

Isn't this a situation where you can ask "Am I under arrest?"
If they say yes, you are.
If they say no, you may walk away?

It sounds like the sheriffs handled your "loitering" or whatever complaint kind of pissy to me.
I would go to the stion and talk to the chief, or whoever handles such things.

Dats Deeetroit. You're white, not selling drugs, and did not run when they approached you, suspicious activity all in troit. Besides, you did not offer then donuts or a bribe.

Sorry, Troit sucks, the mayor sucks and the Chief of the PoPo sucks. I will never spend a DIME in Detroit till it gets their act together. While the cops had a complaint and had to check it out, they have NO sense of civility. A simple Hi, and a few questions would have sufficed, as they had NO reasonable suspicion about any illegal activity. I don't understand why you did not get their names and badge number and make a complaint to the Judge, the PD [like that would do jack] the Court, and send a letter of complaint to the Feds in charge of oversight of the PD because of shitty officers and staff. I'd ask to be excused myself from jury duty and claim I would be tainted by my recent run in with poor officers and that I would be biased against them. Bet you would be excused. Then write letters of complaint. [You DO know they are under fed. oversight, right?]

You should have started yelling "Why are you picking on me, IS IT BECAUSE I AM WHITE"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, sorry for your experience but maybe there was a legit complaint, someone could have called in on you because you were walking around and messing with the phone, maybe they thought you were nutso or homeless.

I know I would've called. I thought he was nuts just from reading that post.

My favorite line:

and since there's no clock I use a street sign that said no standing no parking, this lane must turn left as a sun dial, the shadow moves to what I figure is probably about 11:30 or so, I sit some more then pace around, and ask someone I see with a watch, he tells me 11:25, my sun dial skills must be pretty good I tell myself

Damn the paragraphs and grammer. Most of the posts here were by folks that posted just to flame his thesis which they never bothered to even read. Of the ones that DID read it, it seems that 95% missed his point. If I can take the liberty of speaking for him, his main point was that he was harrassed and treated very unprofessionally by LEOs under the guise of "following up" on a complaint, all for doing nothing wrong other than unsuccessfully attempting to make a phone call and, apparently, breathing earth's atmosphere. Was this well written enough? Did I pass?

Something horrible should happen to those officers and their families. Natural causes, of course. They had no business interfering with him at all, since their own observations could not have corroborated any complaint of unlawful conduct by the poster. They had no business declining to explain what they were up to -- except of course in the likely event that they were lying. They are tyrants, and they should suffer.

How old are you? Not trying to be insensitive, but damn....Times up north must be harder than I thought.

It kinda sucks that .gov would place the burden of jury duty on a guy who has no personal transportation, or even a timepiece.

Thanks for the summary. Somebody needs to tell the author that paragraphs are free.

If the cops had the foresight that he would post the story the way he did, they would have been justified in tasing him.

Sounds perfectly normal to me. If you're a high strung mental patient with OCD, that happens to be high on crack and out on a day pass.

Thats about my take from it.....
