Posting from the new Pavilion DV7T. This thing is lightning fast. Blows my Dell XPS out of the water in terms of build, quality, price and service. Last HP thing I owned was a Presario back in probably 98. Color me impressed HP!

Cool story bro!

You should see the Elitebook 8540w I use at work.  That thing's a beast, even with only 4 Gb RAM.

I have a ProBook.

I have a couple complaints,  the built in speakers are crap..  barely usable.   And the Wireless NIC drops frequently.

Other than that.. I like it.. just wish i had the SSD.

Compared to my Wife's Macbook Air, its a boat anchor..

Not impressed with HP laptops... flimsy construction, lots of flex, keys break easily.

notebookreview is pretty good, I've spent a good amount of time in the HP forums.

I have a probook 4520s. Its not bad, I got it because it was cheep after I killed my HP DV6000t. I dislike the trackpad, it doesn't have separate mechanical buttons, the pad and buttons are all one. But at least the middle click registry key still works in the new synaptics drivers.

Why would Harry Potter have anyone impressed?

My HP netbook does its job... but I don't think it necessarily "impresses" me.

The last HP full laptop I had flat out fried its motherboard. It was a defect with the model type.

So, HP is "meh" in my eyes.

I fucking despised the trackpad for some time.  In fact somewhere on the internet is a rant where I threatened to go to an HP campus and commit arson over the issue

I finally was able to come to peace and actually now prefer it.  The key is that you need to change your work habits and the way you interact with the computer.

I run the latest Synaptics driver with an assload of customizations, TouchPad Locker, and Reil's touchpad app (mainly for three finger middle click).

I wouldn't trade it for anything and when I jump on one of my other laptops I end up getting pissed because of the missing real estate and all the cool shit that I *can't* do that I can on the trackpad.

I am happy with my Envy 17.   The only complaints I have is that it gets hot and the mousepad blows.

I tried the new drivers but it disables the on/off button that's incorporated into the top right corner of the trackpad. I tried the three finger middle click but it never worked for me, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. But a few years ago I discovered a registry key that enables middle click when both buttons are pressed simultaneously.

It's a little bit of a game of driver roulette when it comes to the synaptics stuff and the HP touchpads.

Somewhere out there is a writeup with all this convoluted crap wherby you install one driver, then another, then do some stuff, then install another driver and you end up being on some recent version and still having the tap top left to disable.

Check windows update from the device manager as well, sometimes there are newer versions available that support all features and HP hasn't certified them and made them available for download at their support site.  If you download directly from Synaptic you will almost always be getting a generic driver that may or may not support features that were customized for HP.

Dell had a bad motherboard run issue.  Do did toshiba.  So did ASUS.

ALL manufacturers have production run issues with certain models from time to time.  Good luck finding one who doesn't.

I don't disagree. They are trying to make money so they all put out new products as fast as they can.

But as I said, HP hasn't "impressed" me –– they seem pretty mediocre/what I'd expect out of a major computer company.
