My daughter plays competitive club soccer and High School soccer and is quite accomplished at it. Seriously, she's just a Freshman this Fall but her High School coaches tried to sneak her into a combine that several Big 12 college scouts were holding...

Needless to say, tournament travel & gear expenses eat up a significant portion of our disposable income.

Well, she destroys a pair of cleats about every 4 months and just went out and got a new pair today.

I made the mistake of telling her, "Just get the pair that fits you best and is most comfortable on your feet..."

Her last pair were right around $100...

This pair?

Adidas Kangaroo Leather cleats...$240!!!

HOLY SHIT, my asshole is still hurting from that one...

But, what can I say...I gotta do right by my kid...all of her coaches are telling us that she's one of the best they've ever seen at "seeing" the field and understanding the complete game...

If she loves it, and she's that good, then those investments in gear could save you a LOT of money come tuition time.

If you've got children in H S you're going to pay. There's no way out. Then along comes collage, it gets worse before it gets better.

I've got two girls in college. One played basketball in H S, the other cheered. It was constantly fund raise this, donate that, buy these, gotta have new. What's sad, one girl had to quit because her family couldn't afford it. That's how you can tell when the bullshit has gone to far.

Then one got married back in the summer. This wiped me and her mom out. I have no money.

dang dude!

be glad your girl is not in baseball. I have two boys in high school baseball!

cleats = 60-100 bucks a year
Mitt = 150-350  (we got lucky and bought one from another kid he outgrew for 75
bat = 250-400

this is generally per year except for the mitt.

this is before uniform, travel fees etc....

baseball is brutal.

One day she will be able to pay you back for that $240 pair of shoes with her huge income as a professional women's soccer player.

Seriously though, good on you for taking care of your kids whether or not it makes good fiscal sense.

I'm just messing with you, mine's a 13y/o ODP goal keeper, she's doing the same things yours are though. Club, HS AND ODP.

'course you can look at it this way, at least you ain't droppin' $145-160 for a pair of gloves every 6-7 games. Plus training gloves at $80 a pair every 6 weeks or so.

Daughter #1 is a competitive Irish Dancer.  Think 2K for a dress that lasts a year.

Yes, I said Two Thousand Dollars.  Hard shoes, $200.  6 months tops.

Upside is the used dresses still fetch quite a pretty penny.

I consider myself lucky that daughter #2 switched from Irish Dance to soccer.  I just laugh when she needs a new pair of cleats!

I've got a sophomore daughter that plays travel soccer and the 8th grade boy that wrestles on the national circuit. I never have any money.

We just dropped $200 on a weekend wrestling camp and $600 for the travel league soccer. I have had to buy my son 5 pairs of wrestling shoes this year since he is growing so fast.

About right, actually.

My first pair of higher-end soccer cleats were Puma King Peles, kangaroo leather, and they were $65 in 1973. That was a lot of jack for soccer shoes back then.

They lasted until 1980, when I bought a pair of Puma Super Kings-again kangaroo leather-for $95.

I mink oiled them once a year.

I used those shoes for soccer AND softball, until I flat wore them out and tossed them in 1995.

You get what you pay for, and when it came to my soccer shoes I spared NO expense.

Have you guys heard of this sport called shooting?
The guns you buy are really expensive and you can't have just one.
Then they cost you extra money every time you pull the trigger.
Then there's special protective gear you need that you don't use with hardly any other sport...
Plus range fees, club memberships, competition fees...
I could go on and on.

Once you find the cleats which fit your daughter, try online stores such as Eastbay.com.

My daughter had a pair of the kangaroo leather cleats for soccer, she said they were the best pair she's ever had. I don't remember the brand. They didn't like wet weather, we had several weeks where it seemed to rain every other day and the uppers started to separate from the soles. My daughter did get over 4 months out of them, her position/playing style probably had something to do with how long they lasted. So if your daughter is burning through cleats every 4 months, you may want to start looking now for a cheaper source.

Actually, that's a good price for Kangaroo leather shoes. A few years ago, a pair would fetch you between $400-500.

Plus the actual activity costs are significant as well. Peewees at our local association is $700 for the season, then beyond that it's real easy to be knocking on 4 digits for equipment, even if you lease skates.

Just imagine having a kid that plays hockey October to March and races motocross April to September. That would be a doozy of a double whammy. Thank God my son doesn't race anymore.

Our Peewee travel fees were $1450 for the season, plus actual travel costs, plus friendly games, plus tournaments, plus...you get the idea.  My son loves it, plus we get some quality father/son time when we travel.  You just have to go into it with your eyes and wallet open.
