Whats better about the XM8 than the G36?  Why hasn't the US looked at the G36 like they have looked at the XM8?  Whats the real difference besides the quick change barrel on the XM8.

Well the XM8 is a product improved G36. Kinda self explanatory. I think the G36 looks cooler though!

It would put more $$ in the pockets of HK.

I sure like the G36 although I have never shot one.  I think the US Capital Police use them

Many people around here have a sore spot for the XM8. Personally, I don’t care for the XM8 and I think its adoption would be a mistake, but I do think that if the new SCAR L and H are good enough for our Special Forces guys, they are good enough for the rest of the military. Perhaps we should look into adopting them? Either that or just be done with it and convert all of our M16s and M4s to gas piston uppers.

With the G-36, you can put any and all optics on it.
With the XM-8 American soldiers will have to use unproven HK proprietary optics so that some retired general can make a shit load of money.
That about sums it up.

Its also kindof odd that the G36 is is use with the German and Spanish military (according to HKs website) but instead trying to sell us the battle proven G36, HK is pushing the XM8 on our military.  It really does sound like someone is looking for some kickbacks if the XM8 deal goes through.

From DIRECT source visiting H&K in Obendorff, Germany, the XM8 is a ALL AMERICAN redesign of the G36.

I dunno why, but H&K engineers don't even want the XM8 to be mentioned when asked...

imho, G36 is FAR better than XM8. Solutions? Keep M16 and M4...

Lala Land?

I haven't heard anything about G36s failing in Iraq... Especially considering that there are few, if any, German troops in Iraq. It's kinda like saying the Ford C5 Corvette failed...

From what I have read the XM8 will allow for quick caliber changes. SOF tested the XM8 2004 and report that the XM8 will be able to fire the 5.56, 5.44X39 and 6.8.  The HK G36 is chambered for 5.56 only.

Considering that the XM8/G36 doesn't do anything that the M16/M4 can't do, they had to make the XM8 look more "future-iffic" so the brass could drool over it.

The housing on the G36 is fairly thin and can slightly start to melt under prolonged automatic fire.

The stock on the G36 is not adjustable for length, something the military wants.

The bridge on the G36 is not the greatest, mainly the aperature on the built in sighting modual is too small.

The G36 is...Europe...the military wanted it Americanized.

The barrel is not as quickly changeable as on the XM8.

The XM8 is a little simpler to break down.

The G36 is a fine weapon system.  Perhaps the best in Europe right now.  But America needs a weapon that will offer additional advantages over what everyone else has.  The XM8 is the advancing of the KE 5.56 half of the OICW, which was based off of the G36.  So like everyone is saying...the XM8 is just a G36 in new clothes.

Now...what does the XM8 (and G36) have over the M4...jeesh...lets not go there...please.  I really don't want to get into it twice in the same day.

Do you want me to go into the number of times you have discredited yourself on this site?
