Good luck to all you patients. yes I called back and got someone with more than ONE brain cell and got the answer...

When I was in HIPAA training we must have spent 20 minutes going over the correct pronunciation, it was HIP-AAAH not HIP-PAAH.

My hospital is going to share my medical history with every hospital or clinic in the state of Iowa.
They gave me the opportunity to opt out, for now.
I opted out.

Iowa city will be the hub. Every entity that interacts with them will have access to any patient's records seen at my hospital. Every entity that interacts with an entity that has a patient's records can access the records.
So...That would be most of the health care facilities in the state when you start connecting associations.

lol,  WTF do you have to fax them the  treatment waiver?

I just had a procedure yesterday.   Dr. was very explicit to call if I have any related problems.  He was also very explicit that I call should I go to the hospital for anything unforeseen in the next 30 days.

I kind want the docs/surgeons to know if I have any weak points at the moment.

Sounds more like a case of the stupid rather than a HIPAA restriction.

They are allowed to share information with other health care providers, but I guess you know that.

On the flip side, If the caller doesn't know your voice, how do they know you are who you say you are?  We require them to provide 2 patient identifiers, their name, and who they work for.  Hipaa violations happen on occasion still.  People get fired over that shit so that's why they are cautious.  I would want to lose my job over a phone call.  Good luck finding another one too after being fired for that.

My wife is a home health PT. She tells me sometimes she sees people from the same family, sometimes moms, dads and children. When the family asks how their family members are progressing with therapy she has to deny seeing them, even if they are directly around the corner or across the street. She says they give her the look.

I understand the need to keep your social security number and other related items private But I have no idea why I cant state you were found at home with a dildo in your ass when you in fact were. The police can release all kinds of info. Just because it hurts your feels doesnt mean it has to be guarded like the plans to the stealth bomber.   Whose in that room, why was this patient here , who got picked up drunk on the side of the road? Why the hell is that private other than feels?

Yep.  They won't even tell you if your kid or spouse is in the ER or hospital.

In 1964 we used to print in the local weekly newspaper a list of patients in the local hospital.

Yeah, we listed "white" and "colored" separately, and they were in separate wings of the hospital.

Wikipedia:

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA; Pub.L. 104–191, 110 Stat. 1936, enacted August 21, 1996) was enacted by the United States Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996. It has been known as the Kennedy–Kassebaum Act or Kassebaum–Kennedy Act after two of its leading sponsors. Title I of HIPAA protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs. Title II of HIPAA, known as the Administrative Simplification (AS) provisions, requires the establishment of national standards for electronic health care transactions and national identifiers for providers, health insurance plans, and employers

One of the most frustrating things about HIPAA is that pretty much any government agency seems to be exempt and can ask for (and providers are allowed to give) any sort of information it wants.

The fact of the patient's presence in the ER is itself covered by HIPAA.  If the ER staff can tell you that, surely they can tell you WHY the patient is there.

Which one of these calls is a doctor?

"Hello. This is Dr. Quigley. I received a call about a patient of mine, Jane Doe. How may I be of assistance?"

"Hey*, this is Quigley. Someone called me about Jane Doe.** What's going on?***"
