Older versions of HDMI cannot handle the data for that resolution and refresh rate. HDMI up to and including 1.2 cannot. HDMI 1.3 can support 144 Hz for 1080p, however I am not sure if the extra resolution of the sides of your monitor would be a problem or not. HDMI is at end of life.
Nvidia GPU's hooked to a monitor through HDMI will default to limited color space. For some reason Nvidia drivers think that if you hook up through HDMI that you are attaching to a TV, every single setup I have done are this way. You can manually fix it by going to Nvidia control panel > Resolution > Output Dynamic Range change from "limited" to "full."
I use HDMI myself, just 1920x1080 @ 60Hz, however it's kind of a pain having to change the above setting every single time I update my drivers. My monitor does not have displayport inputs or I would switch over.
Displayport can handle MUCH more data than HDMI can. Also, the graphics card will default to full color range, and will be less of a hassle. If you have the option, go displayport.
