Miller bought them... not AB. They also bought OLY at (roughly) the same time and now both breweries are closed. That's logic that only a business major could understand. Rainier Dark was the only brew worth a damn in the first place (and it was practically only available at the brewery itself).

Now that i think about it i believe it was Pabst that bought ranier.

Either way the original Ranier Brewery was never part of the deal and wa retained by the original company and later sold off to Tully's. So now we get to look at their crap logo everyday on I-5

Spent a good chunk of one summer working as a secretary/file clerk at the Seattle Rainier brewery. Thought it was really cool that employees got something like 2 cases a month free, thought it wasn't cool at all that I wasn't 21 yet.

Loved the commercials!

They're actually all the same beer except with different packaging. Kinda like Duff beer on the Simpsons.
