Guns that don't float my boat. by: Lordtrader 1) Mini14 although I have considered getting one, it was just to have one and not cause I NEEDED it. When I was in CA it was the closest I can get to a military style rifle. 2) FAL, much the same reason as the Mini14. 3) 1911's, they feel funny in my hand. Too damn heavy. Great for collecting sakes, but I can't see shooting it. Definitely a pistol past its time IMHO. 4) UZI, again too heavy, bulky and lacks sex appeal(don't know if a gun can have that, but its the best way to explain it.) I mean why buy an UZI when there's an MP5. 5) Black powder guns, again something past its time. Great for collecting but not shooting. Some may say I don't appreciate good guns and some may say I am dead on. So lets hear your idea of "Guns that don't float your boat"

I'm with ya on the mini 14's, but my drue dislike is reserved for "fancy" guns. You know, wildly engraved multi-thousand dollar jobs that may never get shot at all. Always in the posession of the guy at the range who takes you to task for use/rapid fire of your "assault guns".
Link Posted: 1/20/2002 10:23:57 AM EDT
1) mini14 - i agree 2) FAL - disagree. i've owned M1A, HK91. don't have either. just a FAL i built. 3)1911 - disagree. my kimber custom classic is a hoot to shoot at reactive targets. 1 1/2" 7 shot groups at 25 yds. 4) UZI, no comment 5) black powder, no comment

Guns that don't float my boat. by: Philadelphia_Gunman 1) I agree that the 1911 is a gun that is past it's prime, especially since it only holds 8 rounds. (flame suit on) 2) SKS I don't like becuase you have to load them with stripper clips or use those weird looking mags. 3) Any pistol smaller than 9mm or 38 spec.(not including 22 target pistols though) A snub nose 38 is plenty small enough for cc. 4) Semi auto Rifles that shoot pistol bullets. If I want to shoot pistol rounds, I'll do it with a pistol. 5) Any semi auto verison of a submachinegun. edited to change #4 to semiauto rifles. I do like cowboy lever action rifles.

1)Anything made by Lorcin, Jennings or Byroc. 2)Mini anything by Ruger. 3)Any Ruger semi. 4)Any semi-rifle that shoots handgun ammo. Cowboy carbines I can live with. 5)Any blackpowder rifle. 6)Any of those pimp pistols by Taurus. Everyone knows which ones those are!

I'll remember your list LT if I'm able to make it to the next shoot. Then I won't let you shoot my Mini-14 or my UZI (assuming I've picked it up by then). [:)]

I won't post a list of guns that don't float my boat, because most do. I'll just do the easy thing and pick on *your* list! 1) Mini14 although I have considered getting one, it was just to have one and not cause I NEEDED it. When I was in CA it was the closest I can get to a military style rifle. It's not a bad plinker with the right mags. I like mine. I know I am a minority amongst the ranks of AR15 dot commers. 2) FAL, much the same reason as the Mini14. The FAL rocks. Handles well, hits hard, most widely distributed 7.62 NATO rifle, what's not to like? 3) 1911's, they feel funny in my hand. Too damn heavy. Great for collecting sakes, but I can't see shooting it. Definitely a pistol past its time IMHO. A great timeless pistol with the best trigger (SA) of all "combat handguns." I have five and am always looking for more. 4) UZI, again too heavy, bulky and lacks sex appeal(don't know if a gun can have that, but its the best way to explain it.) I mean why buy an UZI when there's an MP5. Well, $4,000 might be one reason, the ballpark difference between the two. Let alone the mag prices. The Uzi is a WAR SMG, the MP5 is more of a SWAT team SMG. And sex appeal is in the eye of the beholder! I have a Vector on the way which I hope will get here some day. 5) Black powder guns, again something past its time. Great for collecting but not shooting. No comment on that one . . . dabbled once in black powder but it didn't much trip my trigger.

Lordtrader! I'm shocked! How can you not like FALs...and how can you dislike them for the same reasons you dislike a mini-14...considering that they have nothing in common... I just got my first FAL recently and I'm already getting that potato chip feeling...you know, you can't just have one. They look bad ass, sound bad ass, are easy to strip and easy to maintain...whats not to like? Oh yeah...and mags are cheap as dirt! If you don't like FALs, then I"m sure you don't like AKs either, because AKs, I think, are comaparable to FALs... What gives man?
Link Posted: 1/20/2002 11:15:22 AM EDT
1. any .44 mag, unless to be used as defense against big game (no im not a puss, but i dont have to prove that i can shoot a big gun, either) 2. any gun with a capacity of less than seven rounds (maybe im impatient, but if i cant "empty" it then it was never full to begin with) 3. shotguns that cost more than a lifetime supply of viagra and hair plugs (come on, when i get that old and damn rich...the shotty is not gonna help me get any) 4. any gun that the hood rats ogle at local gun shows. (except on the rare occasion when they pick up a nickle plated h&k, sig, etc. and say "say, how much?" 5. anything in .30-06. nothing personal about these guns mind you. (its just that all my relatives in oklahoma always ask "hurrm...well is that a .30-06" about any gun i show them) oh and i hate ar pistols, like come on...who are we kidding...they are only cool in the movies... well thats my list... maybe i can change lordtraders mind about 1911's...
Link Posted: 1/20/2002 11:18:05 AM EDT
oh and how can u not like a FAL adjustable gas system, distinct sound n' feel hard hitter hey its not sexy but its somewhat suave in its own way

I do not dislike em. Matter fact I want one. they just don't do a thing for me. If I had $1000 and a FAL or a Pre-ban AK underfolder were put in front of me, I would buy the AK on the spot and save up for the FAL as a later purchase. Its just not on my NEED and MUST HAVE list It is on the WANT list. Need and want are 2 different things.
Link Posted: 1/20/2002 11:24:03 AM EDT
1. Anything that says *Hi-Point*. 2. Anything that starts with *Non-firing....* 3. Those pump-action AR's and AK's I'm seeing more of. Isn't reducing us good-folk to semi- enough for them?? [V] Otherwise, I have respect for most other designs. Be they utilitarian, or God-awfully overdone and overpriced. I mean, when you outshoot the yuppie weekend-shooter, he still needs something to feel good about. [:)>] I could be wrong......

I love most guns, but my neighbor and a lot of guys I know are getting into cowboy action shooting. I just can't get excited about single action revolvers and lever guns.

1. Goofy guns - Acutek, Calico, PA 2. Pawn shop specials - Lorcin, Jennings 3. Glock or any other plastic gun 4. Pump center fire rifles 5. Blackpowder 6. No name variants from third world countries 7. Rifles with no use out side of Africa

Hey! Nice topic Mr. Trader [;)] I personally don't like glocks, revolvers, and SKS's They just look bad to me. They are all reliable platforms, but I just don't like them in my hand, and I don't like their looks. Shawn

Mini 14 Daewoo rifle HK93 M1A

I am amazed that anyone would put a 1911 on his or her shitlist. I chuckle at the “8rounds is not enough capacity" argument. And what is with people who cannot appreciate a gun because it is a “hunting rifle” or a revolver??? It has to be bad, black, and semi in order to be “cool”. My list of boat anchors: 1) SKS with tacky bolt-ons 2) Anything Rossi 3) New model Marlin Levers 4) Another for pump center-fire rifles 5) Anything Llama 6) Anything North American Arms 7) Anything Dakota Arms 8) Anything New England Arms 9) Charles Daly .45s and Shotguns 10) Henry Levers 11) SIG bolt-action rifles 12) Derringers

You need to see a doctor post haste. There is something very, very wrong with you. I would hope they could do something to save your hand. There is nothing finer than holding a nice 1911 in your hand (hell, I don't even have to be shooting it to enjoy holding one.) 1911's are like Shania Twain. Gorgeous to look at, and feel sooooo good in your hands.

po89mm's list of guns that dont float his boat 1. most post ban firearms they just dont look or feel right in their nutered configuran, and ill gladly pay the extra coin for a pre ban if it calls me loud enough. 2. any glock they have no personality and feel like a brick 3. 3rd world no name guns 4. hi-point, jennings, or any other cheap gat 5. guns with built in gun locks more to follow when i think of them

Guns that don't do much for me either: Mini-14's, since I learned about Ruger and the 10 round magazine, and that Mini's aren't exactly tack-drivers no matter what the A-Team managed to do with them. Ruger autos and S&W autos - they just don't look right to me. Billion-dollar shotguns. Why? Just, why? Engraved, inlaid-with-exotic-wood-or-horn-or-bone guns-you'd-never-fire-much-less-take-into-the-field-for-fear-of-scratching. If you can't shoot it, it's not a gun. It's a piece of art. My tastes in art run towards other things. Guns are for shooting. Guns that sell for less than $90. New. Yes, I understand that for some people that's all they can afford to protect themselves. Get a used .38 revolver. It (probably) won't fall apart in your hands. Eat beanie-weenies for a month if that's what it takes. Glocks and other plastic guns. Same as Ruger and S&W autos, they just don't look right. Personal tastes. Different strokes for different folks. That's what makes the world go 'round.

Dammit...everybody down on blackpowder. I love hunting with mine. So cool when the whole woods is full of smoke and you have to wait for it to clear before you see if you hit. Anyway, another for the cheap ghetto guns. Ruger Semi-Auto centerfire pistols(.22 is OK, but others are just strange) Bolt Action, box fed slug guns. integrated lock guns Rifles in calibers that cost a paycheck for a box of shells. 10 gauges 28 gauges Mossberg 500's Think thats it. DISCLAIMER: IF ANY OF THESE GUNS ARE FREE, THEY ARE MINE. can at least trade them

I wish it to be known for the record i place stipulations on my love of black powder weponry 1. there can be no plastic on them 2. there can be no stainless steel on them 3. they must not be able to accept a 209 primer 4. they must not have a warning label stamped on them. and most importantly ..... 5. the must be original pieces in excess of 150 years old or better UNLESS.... they are original black powder cartridge firearms.

I hate the Ruger P series pistols and all S&W auto's. They just plain suck!
Link Posted: 1/20/2002 2:44:31 PM EDT
Guns that pretend to be something they aren’t. Pellet pistols dummied up to look like a S&W revolver, SIG semi, etc. come to mind. Other examples would include: the Savage Model 101 single shot .22LR pistol with a dummy cylinder to make it look like a Colt Single Action Army, the Stevens Model 89 single shot lever action rifle with a dummy tubular magazine to make it look like a Winchester lever action repeater, the Kassnar (jager) .22LR semi-auto rifle dummied up to look like an AR-15, and 10/22’s dummied up to look like anything other than a 10/22. Also, not to offend anyone, but I’ll include AR-15’s with dummy telescoping stocks, dummy flash hiders, etc. (Granted, this is bit more excusable since the real thing will get you put in jail!)

allow me to explain as i light the candles on the holy shrine of lord browning. My son, its hard to appreciate a bland, soulless hunting gun like a remington 7600 or a ruger redhawk. They have no personality no soul and no character. now compair such a bland thunder stick to a nice pre war model 70 or S&W triple lock or m-14 that simply drip with personality, soul and character. and you shall have the answers you seek now go forth and sin no more my son.

No, see everything in my want list is only for collecting purposes. Most I don't even want to shoot. Just need em to round out the collection. However, my needs list is what I dream of every nite and long for in my waking days.

The Gamo R-77 (a CO2 pellet revolver made to look like a S&W 586) is a great training tool. It lets a newbie learn the fundamentals without the distractions of noise and smoke.

Just a word about Glocks. If you've ever had to slap your gun out of its holster with your heart/adrenaline/tunnel vision going and track naturaly on the guys mask and later realize you weren't wondering whether it would work for you, you'd be glad you owned a Glock too. I'm also glad the racoon decided to run the other way because I just knocked it 15 feet out of a tree and it wasn't happy.

I don't like guns with fancy wood and engraving. If it costs too much and looks too pretty to take to the field, I don't want it. I also have no use for guns that are undependable. If a Lorcin works, I am fine with it.
Link Posted: 1/20/2002 5:57:05 PM EDT
I don't know about the 1911 comment but I like them. Who says they only hold 8 last time I fired my p-12 it held 13, thats more than the glock of the comparable size. also my full size gov model holds 9rds not 8, your in some deep shit if you cant get it done with 9rds in the gun and a back up mag.

More...... 1. Any auto pistol without a hammer or external safety. 2. Firearms that have too many external attatchments and look like something out of a bad sci-fi movie. 3. ARMSCOR anything 4. Blackpower (modern)(clarification on earlier post) 5. Lever actions with scopes and slings 6. Shotguns with scopes 7. Drillings 8. Auto pistols with more than a 5' barrel
