Customer came in today with a rusty, crusty, bolt action 12ga Marlin goose gun. He wants to sell it and says it is missing the magazine, which is very common on these bolt shotguns. I flip the shotgun over and WTF?????

Someone had drilled a series of wannabe Magnaport holes underneath the barrel right in front of the handguard. Piss poor Photoshop drawing below to illustrate. The holes started about a half inch from the end of the stock and made their way about 2" up the barrel towards the muzzle. The holes started out as small (roughly 1/16") and progressed up to 3/16". About 8 to 10 holes side by side and not drilled accurately.

I thought it was some type of dumb ass de-mil job, but the holes increased in diameter so I am ASSuming it was a half assed Magnaporting attempt? I wish I had time to get a picture...... I have no idea why you would want hot, high pressure gas venting down just inches from your hand, while driving the barrel upwards.

Was the barrel dremel fluted as well?

I bet bubba thought it would keep gas from the ports from interfering with his sight picture.
Link Posted: 7/23/2013 6:25:47 PM EST
lol recoil enhancing ports

i always wanted to try getting one of those set-screw tunable brakes and opening only the bottom ports

How much did you give him for it?

This.

I know a guy who decided to cut down his 28" 870 barrel to 18". Took the barrel off, measured 18" and got to work with the hacksaw. He was not amused when I pointed out that his measured 18" included the upper barrel extension that slides back into the receiver and that he was now the owner of a very illegal unregistered 16.75" shotgun.

Shit yea man, that's sexy! It's also not a few scant inches off the stock, done by a monkey, and really, the crowning glory of that masterful piece of firearms engineering you got is that your ports point in the right direction.

What the blue diddlyfuck Gomer thought he was doing I may never truly understand. None of us will I wager. Chalk it up to illness, strong drink, or the devil hisself.

He needed muzzle lift to compensate for the world's worst trigger mash.

Maybe it's just a way to keep the shooter from gripping the barrel

Maybe he shot geese from extreme rollover prone?

Probably an Australian shotgun.

Anywhere south of the equator, it'll work just fine.

I blame factory shot shell quality control. Mixing #9 shot in with 0000 buck in the same shell. It's a shot size sorter. It's done that way so only the bigger, more deadlier shot hits the target.

The guy had a bad execution of follow through on his shots.. He would relax too early and drop the muzzle and end up shooting low all the time. This compensated for that

Hey, what do you think would happen if you put holes in a barrel and you shoot little tiny bullets down it that would fit through those holes?

Lets gas pressure out to reduce felt recoil ( when in the correct location ) same idea as a muzzle brake

So water doesn't stay in the barrel when you clean your gun.

Finally.....

A serious response. Thank you.

Is not "magnaporting". Is "power assist".

Link Posted: 7/24/2013 4:09:36 AM EST
Thunder storm rolled in last night and took out the power after I posted this, so I didn't get to reply....

1. The idea he took the barrel off and drilled the wrong side. I thought about that, but it still doesn't make sense, even if the "ports" were on the top of the barrel they would be to far back to really do anything. The gun had a 28" or 30" barrel and the ports were right by the end of the stock.

2. Hard to believe, but I passed on buying the gun. When he first walked in I was hoping it was a 10ga, then after seeing the quality of craftsmanship I knew I was not worthy of owning such a fine custom gun.

Link Posted: 7/24/2013 4:24:54 AM EST
I have seen this before. It is actually a way of reducing the sound signature of the gun without the ATF calling it a suppressor.
I saw a guy with a big piece of PVC pipe with holes like this drilled in it fitted to the barrel of his shotgun. He said it greatly reduced the percieved sound of the muzzle report by directing the gases toward the ground instead of into the air. He swore it worked, but I didn't have him demonstrate it to me.

Don't the bullets shoot up through the holes?

the pellets are still encased by the wad until wad and pellets exit the barrel, so no, no bullets exit the holes, just gas
