So I think I'm going to fo on a Fender '72 reissue Tele for $400.

Thing is, dude peeled away most of the finish.
And he had a sticker on it too.

How difficult is it to refinish these?

These are his potato pics, not mine.

It's not a Squire.
It's a MIM Fender.

$400 is about $200 too much for that guitar. Finishing it would be easy, but the time and cost wouldn't really be worth it.
Link Posted: 4/16/2017 3:54:57 PM EDT
Assuming it's not a custom shop version, it's like $500 guitar to begin with.

Doesn't seem like a refin would be worth it if you're putting $400 up front.

What do I know?

FPNI.. if it's a Mexican reissue they are $400-$500 new.
ETA..
It's not a Squire is it?  That's be even worse of a deal.
I'd give $250 tops in present condition.

Sorry.  Been drinking beer.
Offer $350.  What's the worse that could happen?
I've refinished a few.  It's not hard.

He's gonna throw in a HSC for the $400.

I just want to strip the rest of the finish off.
Smooth it out, and apply a clear coat.

But I don't know how any of this will affect the tone.

That whole finish affecting tone thing?  Meh.  That's something Gibson snobs wax philosophical about.  Bunch of esoteric baloney

I would offer $300, let him counter offer with $350 and take it for not a penny more, as long as everything else checks out (electronics are good and neck is original and straight as an arrow, not counting the intentional bow of the fretboard).
Link Posted: 4/16/2017 4:21:33 PM EDT
Dont worry about affecting tone.  I think this whole nitro finish thing is mostly snake oil.  Easiest way is to hand apply a poly lacquer.  Maybe 4 to 5 coats with fine sanding and then steel wool between applications.  You aren't putting on a 1/8" coat of poly on it like most Chinese factories do.  I can see a really thick coat of poly lacquer kind of deadening vibrations but you won't be doing that.

So you guys seem to think that this thread is about the price of the guitar.

Please read and comprehend the OP before you post.

Bc the owner peeled it off.  It prob got dropped and the finish cracked. I've had it happen.  It's so thick that it will flake off. The dude picked at it. Prob took a putty knife to it.  Putting a thin coat of poly won't result in the same thing happening.

remove the neck and check the neck pocket. lots of fakes out there especially with Teles and Strats.

Why did you even post the price then, slick?

No one cares that you don't care that you are getting opinions on something you don't want.

I wouldn't worry about the refinish hurting the tone. I'm sure there are plenty of instructions online on how to do it. It can't be that hard.  Just sand, apply tung oil, sand again, repeat until you have the finish you want.

By the way, that is a pretty good price for that guitar.

Let me rephrase:  Anything below at least an American standard is not worth the money to refinish it.  Even that is questionable.

It's already not even a deal as is so adding refinishing makes it a terrible deal.  Is that not what you are asking?

If the finish bothers you, you can always sand it and krylon it. Don't bother with a clear coat if you don't mind a worn look after playing it for 10-15 years. The krylon is pretty tough.

Anything else is putting too much money and time into the guitar. Also, where is the 7th string?
Link Posted: 4/16/2017 5:13:23 PM EDT
May as well do it right if you want to refinish it. Reranch forum

I did a few strats using the Reranch nitro laquer and they came out excellent.

Mexican Strat and don't look back.  Get a like-new one from Craigslist.  Don't pay more than $300.

The guitar was made in Mexico, it's the definition of a fake, no need to dig deeper.

I'm guessing you're not totally familiar with Fender's Ensenada factory.

OP, it's not terribly hard to refinish a guitar. I did this thing with Duplicolor acrylic lacquer through a Harbor Freight HVLP paint gun and an Iwata airbrush. It mostly takes elbow grease and time.

The squire Tele is like a $450 guitar new....I don't know why you would want to pay $400 for a bumblefucked one.

ETA: reading fail on my part. It's not a squire.
Link Posted: 4/16/2017 6:38:22 PM EDT
I've refinished several guitars. It's fun.

You can use a little acetone to remove sticker glue then rub it with some tung oil.
Link Posted: 4/16/2017 6:40:33 PM EDT
I would pass, but if you did get it, I would put a relic finish on it..  It is easy to find a good deal on a tele.

Hell, all OP has to do to accomplish that is to rub through the lacquer in the places where hands would have removed it from playing. He's partly the way there, and after that. he needs to let a few cigarettes burn down between the strings on the headstock.
