I just put some seeds in starter cubes for tobacco... 6 of each type, I got two types, a Turkish variety and another that is a Virginian variety.

two things stood out. If you cannot see small objects... dont try this and the slightest breeze will blow them away.

I took a toothpick and carved it into a tiny spoon to pull them out of the pack.

Literally 5 seeds will fit on the head of a pin.

I planted 5 per cube. I will see what germinates and keep this updated.

That's got to be illegal somehow. You can't just go around growing plants and smoking them, it's unAmerican.

I know a friend who grew some "green tobacco", I think it was the illegal variety though.

I was planning on using my attic... it stays around 120 degrees or a bit more during the day and drops at night. Heat is no problem here in FL. and it is not a dry heat, I hope it works out ok, I'll keep this updated as i go.

I will need to build a press later to press plugs to cut my RYO off of.

Nother "project"..

Any good resources on how to cure it? I grew some in my garden last summer. They didn't like the 110+ heat with 20% humidity we have around here. They seem to like a more mild climate.

Tag.

Keep this updated....this is interesting, especially with the new tax that the gooberment is placing on my smokes. grrrr....

ETA: I never understood what my smoking has to do with somebody's kid not having health insurance. Wanna make it fair? Tax toilet paper.

He got the seeds from a bag of tobacco his daughter left in the console for him. Smelled kinda funny when he rolled one, but he didn't seem to mind after a hit or two.

Noticed the seeds, and decided... 'hey, I'll just grow some of this.".

What are you going to make with the tobacco: Cigars, Cigarettes, or Pipe Tobacco?

I roll my own.

So i will be "cutting" itlike cigarette tobacco.

So I guess the simple answer is... instead of buying a can of bugler, I'll just pop open my homegrown. any suggestions?

Sorry, no suggestions. I only smoke cigars. Never tried the other stuff.

My seeds are in the mail. I'm going to give it a try this year, too. I'll start a pictoral thread when I get them started.

In before the feds raid you over an insignificant tax matter.

I don't drink and I don't smoke, but I do feel a strange urge to grow tobacco and make moonshine just as a "fuck you" and sell it on the side.

Care to elaborate?

I roll my own usually, American Spirit most of the time. I also dip a little bit. Is this a worthwhile venture for either application?

FWIW I am kind of a garden bug already and have had moderate to good success growing vegetables.
Link Posted: 2/24/2009 4:35:10 PM EDT
From what I've heard, Americans prefer non-American tobaccos blended together, while Europeans like MD/VA tobacco. Good luck getting the soil to work for you.

Nah, it's not illegal to grow your own tobacco, however with the 2400% increase on roll your own tobacco supplies it is only a matter of time until the fed taxes the growing of tobacco, much like they tax the distilation of spirits.

Cigarette tobaccos are processed to death and blended with stuff like homoginized tobacco. The homo tobacco is old stuff that didn't sell or was swept up from the cutting room floor and ground up, mixed with water and turned into a paste, spread out, dried, then cut up like paper to add to your tobacco.

I saw this on something like How it's Made or Modern Marvels.

Any wonder why fresh, pampered home grown would taste different? I'm not saying that the home grown will taste better, just different. Taste is subjective.

This.... except when you are surrounded above, below, and either side by tobacco on a 90-degree day inside a four tier barn with sweet running everywhere while dipping some cope...

Those that aren't use to it typically get nicotine poison.

I've just ordered four different types of seeds also. It should be interesting to see how these "I'm growing tobacco" threads progress this year.

Good for you.

I can give y'all an update.

Rexydg7 is farming dirt right now. Nothing has come up.

He used the peat moss seed starters, and for whatever reason, the seeds won't come up.

Mine, from last year, came up. Due to my lack of attention, they dried out and died. I had to start a new batch of seeds.

Guys, when these things sprout, they are the tiniest things you have ever seen. They grow pretty quick and get quite large, but start off tiny,

Yep monroe nailed it... I am gonna try another batch as soon as it starts raining regular here... it seems those seeds just did NOT want to germinate... and I usually have a pretty green thumb...

I'm sure it won't be long before Mr Tax Man decides he doesn't like that missed revenue and will outlaw the growing of tobacco.

actually I believe theres shit going on right now to make Nicotine/tobacco fall under the FDA. I might hyave read that on DRUDGE and I believe it had to do with the new electic type cigs and a way to ban the liquid juice they use.

Someone could probly find more info with a google
