That is some kick ass flying.  Should have gotten an air medal for that.

Let us know when you're in command of an aircraft carrier.
Link Posted: 11/19/2008 8:02:38 PM EST
that is awesome, i guess kind of irresponsible but still awesome
Link Posted: 11/19/2008 8:02:44 PM EST
It's what pilots do.  Get over it.
Link Posted: 11/19/2008 8:03:02 PM EST
apparently I'm not up to date on aircraft carriers...are they all nuclear?  Seems kinda dangerous.

All American ones are now.  Most of those Navy boys know how to operate their steeds.  Even if they hit the ship at full speed, the reactors are buried so far inside it wouldn't cause them to melt down.

I was just worried about how close that plane could get before the depleted uranium counterbalance weights used in the ailerons go critical mass with the ship's reactor[/racinfast002]

The US either just retired or will soon retire the last petroleum powered carrier.

If I recall correctly, the pilot was Capt. Dale Snodgrass and it was an approved flight.  He most certainly was not grounded for it...

Yup, and here's a link;

Nuclear power is incredibly safe and efficient, unless you're a retarded soviet.  Don't listen to greenpeace, "bro".

I'd like to think that the reactors on a carrier are protected well enough to withstand a direct impact of a jet like that.

From the link:

And there is a famous shot of you flying past the USS America in 1989 that I understand is more of an optical illusion but still pretty seat of the pants flying.

Most any photographer worth the name will tell you that the effect of the F-14 Tomcat being so close is due to the forshortening effect of a telephoto lens. I spotted it immediately, and I'm not even a professional photographer.

eta

twonami beat me to it.
