Greetings. I'm new to the board and looking forward to sharing topics with all of you.

Starting with: I have an older freind that's a Nam Vet. I was talking with him the other day about AR10's and M14's. He tells me that sand and dirt will get all into an AR. When in the bush, he would much rather really on an M14 (since he has experience with both). I wouldn't have a problem with this, BUT I simply love the rail system's available with the AR...(and the collapsing stock options too).

Thoughts?

Mike_of_austin, be sure to check in the hometown forums. The Austin crew tries to get together once a month for a dinner. DVD Tracker is treating us to dinner next Wednesday, location TBD. Look forward to meeting you.

Be gentle folks. It is his first post. Don't want to throw the baby noob out with the bath water. Be patient with 'em, because that is how we add more folks to the gun culture.

Sand gets into everything...that's why they have cleaning kits.

Tell your friend that the M14 is an out dated, over weight piece of shit just like him.

Both are fine rifles and will serve you well. I like the AR-15 based carbine over all other firearms because of its proven reliability and quick and easy handleing. At my job I can be issued an M4 or and M14. I chose the M4. If I was running around in the desert I might rethink this, but I am not.

Wow... there are definately some real jittery people here. Peak outside through the blinds everyday do ya? (Beleive me, it really is just a women walking her poodle in front of your house).
What I meant by collapsing stocks... is the awb sunset. To my knowledge, it is a option after sunset, isnt it? And the rail system, not available for the M14. And I was talking about AR's in general. Sand get's into them. Yea, they make cleaning kits (DUH!). My freind didn't have time to clean his weapon every time in the feild. Why not think before blurting obvious things out?
Decaf... it'll save lives.

Oh, and thanks to the rest of you.

There are collapsible stocks and rail systems available for the M14 too.

And by your second post, you're not off to a good start.

I suppose the question is: What are you planning on using this rifle for?
Link Posted: 9/3/2004 10:19:45 AM EST
If you want a rifle with rails you can do an AR or an M14. Just be prepared to spend a LOT more on the M14

Can't get much more sand in your rifle than our guys do in Iraq, and I don' t see them carrying M14s.

If it's good enough for them it's probably more than I'll ever need.

ETA: Yes, I have seen a few pictures of our sharp shooters over there with M14s.

You can't get sand into M14's !

Link Posted: 9/3/2004 10:34:55 AM EST
Great! I guess my research didn't fall onto any rail/stock options for the M14. I'll have to look into that again.
Thanks TexasTact. ...I'll have to meet up with ya'll sometime. [Another] friend of mine does a blackpowder shoot in between austin and san marcos...

Rules are basically, no semi's, only single action, must have shotgun, rifle, and pistol, or you won't shoot. Strange rules I know. That limits me, becuase I never wanted a single action. But, visitors/spectators are welcome.

Mike-

Just so you know. The general discussion forum is runs a bit differant than the other forums on arfcom. If the comments here bother don't mess round in the bear pit.

Most of the other forums on this site are much more civil than GD can be.

I think what they are trying to say is, you are bringing up a topic that has been beaten to death 1000s of times. Trust me, most stories about M16s from the Vietnam era are either complete fabrication or are based on early versions of the weapon.

Ditto, check out the AR-15 section. We have a whole list of forums to cover AR topics. Here in GD it can get a litle wild, but thats why we come here. For technical questions I would reccomend going to the specific forum, much more civilized. Welcome aboard and read the Ammo Oracle, it will answer the next ten questions you have about ammo.

And I'll ditto you right back on the Ammo Oracle recommendation. I first came here and didn't even know where to start with .223 ammo. AO filled me in on everything I needed to know.

(anyone had experience with these people)?

-As far as the collapsing stock... Can't seem to find any links advertising them. (again, for after the AWB sunset).

Well young man after 7.5 months in Afghanistan our M4s had no problems.

Now keep in mind that my soldiers cleaned their M4s/SAWS everyday would have alot to do with their reliability. Our M4s stayed dirty during convoys, but when needed they always worked.

There was a LT at the range one day that had a failure to extract issue, but it was fixed by a quick change of the extractor.

The only problem I had was when we were in the back of a HMMWV going to help the AMF that were in a firefight. We hit a bump and the magazine floorplate slamed into the side of the HMMWV and all my rounds went pouring out of the bottom of the magazine. Really it wasnt that big of a deal as I just changed mags.

I love the M16/M4 and will trust my life to it, as I have for the last 13+ years.

I'd really like to get a VLTOR Stock or, if I had the money, a Magpul 93A Modstock.

There's just something fun about making an M4orgery look like a starwars blaster.
