Unfortunately,  I have to drive to Palm Springs tonight ....yep, into occupied territory. ..reminds me of driving into Warsaw Pact countries in the 80's..

Anyway, can I bring my S&W shield?

Yes, you have to transport it in a way that it is not accessible to you while driving, with the ammunition separate from the gun.  Usually just putting the gun in the trunk is sufficient.

CA will not accept your out of state CCW and there is no open carry.

I know I can't carry.... but, don't want to be broke down  on the side of the road without appropriate constitutional safety gear. More looking into where I can store it

Good point.  The OP might want to take a smaller gun and work his way up to the Shield.

I grew up there and left for a very, very good reason.

California will now prohibit the ownership of “large-capacity magazines.” From SB-1446, signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday: “The bill would require a person in lawful possession of a large-capacity magazine prior to July 1, 2017, to dispose of the magazine, as provided.”

State law defines “large-capacity magazines” as anything with more than 10 rounds.

Eh, its not that bad of a place to visit.  I was there two years ago with my wife.  Lots of gay guys, but its not like they are all rapey and what not.  The Ace hotel has a decent restaurant if you want a good meal.

Is the Shield on California DOJ's list of permissible ('approved') handguns?
Regardless of magazine capacity, not all handguns are 'legal' in California

That list only applies to buying a new gun from a dealer.  If you are traveling through California or relocate then the list of approved guns does not apply, as long as the guns conform the other laws on the books.

Do you drive a shitbox? Do you drive like an asshole? If you answered 'No' to both, then there is a 99% probability that you won't have any contact with the police.

I found me a good byob titty bar in 2007 with a Russian stripper that though it was cute I could hit on her in her native tongue.

Don't get pulled over. Even if you follow all the laws they will probably take your shit and give you a  hard time.

May want to consider blending in. go to the craft store and buy some of the magnet sheets, place HRC sticker on sheet, blend in.

California law is a ridiculous morass of bullshit, so confusion abounds.  It takes a damn PhD to figure out what is legal and not legal.  Absolute bullshit.
