Back when I was a teenager, I was a member of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps. In the summer of 1991, I was part of a foreign exchange program where I got to spend two weeks at the UK naval base at Portsmouth.
While there, we spent a day kayaking around Whale Island and stopped for lunch on a beach north of the island. From there, I was able to see what appeared to be a WWII vintage submarine, but it was rusty as hell. It was just sitting at a small pier as if it were waiting to be scrapped. Anyway, I never found out what sub it was or why it was there. So, the other day, I'm looking on Google Earth and notice that Portsmouth, UK is very well detailed, so I zoom in and take a look around. And what do I find just a little north of where the old sub was? Something that appears to be a rusty old WWII vintage submarine. Coordinates are: 50.49'43.80"N by 1.05'32.60"W Pic included for the Google Earth impaired...  |

Almost has the hull outline of a German XXI boat, many boats after WWII copied features from that sub.
You may want to ask Andy (Vito113), he works at Portsmouth for the RN. |

The delivery vehicle for the newest batch of AS50's.  ETA: Perhaps this was to be the next high tech acquisition for the Canucks. If the Lieberals had of been elected it would, have been a done deal.

Heh.... yeah, I accidentally doubled up on the IMG tags on both ends. Noticed the problem as soon as I posted it and fixed it. One second glance, it doesn't look as rusty and as "old" as the one I saw 15 years ago. This one might be more 1950s era, where the other one was definitely WWII as it had those horizonal bars (haven't a clue what they're called or what they're for) coming out of the aft of the sub. I'm wondering if that's just a general scrapyard there. |

Awfully big. If you look at the cars for scale the thing must be close to 500 feet long. It's not being scrapped either, Except for the light crane in the lower part of the pic there isn't any equipment to do so, and no useable work area between the buildings.
Maybe they are using it as a breakwater?

From the looks of it, especially the bow, I would say its an Oberon class. They were all built and commission on the mid to late 60's. Some were sold to Canada.
They were replaced by the Upholder class. Of course, some of these were sold to Canada as well. |

Yep, it's an old Oberon Class diesel electric boat. It was sold to a german museum last year.
She's tied up alongside in Harry Pounds Scrapyard at the top of Portsmouth Harbour. Harry Pound's found fame in the 60's when a load of 'agricutural machinery' they sold as scrap to Israel ended up invading it's arab neighbours. You will find a museum sub at: 50;47;19.10N 1;07;11.89W That's HMS Alliance outside the RN Submarine museum And this is my car outside my office!  Andy |

Cool. Thanks for the reply Andy. I can see that it's an Oberon now. I should have looked closer at the bow. There's some great shots on Google Earth of the Portsmouth base. Didn't think they'd have such detail. I get a kick out of seeing places like Portsmouth and Norfolk this way. |

The Oberons were good boats. We had half a dozen of them. Replaced them with the Colllins Class over the last few years.

Funny I just tried to look at the Controlled Industrial Area at Bremerton WA shipyard. The whole base is blurred out but the commerical docks just to the east are crystal clear.

Little more fun with Google Earth... With all the talk about Iran I thought I'd run the images up the Iranian coast to see what's there. Found what appears to be a military airbase (hardened aircraft shelters and all) and at least one aircraft out in the open. Would this happen to be one of the F-14s that we sold to them back in the 1970s?  |
