Sad if this happens.
http://www.prweb.com/releases/2006/8/prweb427756.htm# SCI FI Channel to Change Name to SurgeTV Effective November 1, 2006, the SCI FI Channel will change their name to SurgeTV, to reflect the changing demographic thrust of the successful long-running cable channel. In addition, deals are currently working out to bring back ECW for a three-times a week run in prime time, as well as reruns (Pre-WWE) of professional wrestling events. (PRWEB) August 24, 2006 -- Effective November 1, 2006, the SCI FI Channel will change their name to SurgeTV, to reflect the changing demographic thrust of the successful long-running cable channel. In addition, deals are currently working out to bring back ECW for a three-times a week run in prime time, as well as reruns (Pre-WWE) of professional wrestling events. SurgeTV hopes to tap into the newfound audience of science fiction wrestling fans, by promoting cross-over programming, including Eureka's Colin Ferguson's guest appearance in the ECW ring, and Season 2 of Stan Lee's Who Wants To Be A Superhero to include ring matches between competitors. Saucier, racier stories will be aired after the midnight hour, and in a change for the popular channel, may include R-rated material. While much of the original programming the SCI FI Channel has produced will remain on air through the next year, SurgeTV expects sweeping changes to the network, shifting away from the so-called "nerd" demographic. This means that SurgeTV will try to appeal to it's growing number of "extreme" viewers by removing all of it's current re-run programming and replacing it with a new "brand" - Xtreme Surge At Night. Effective November 1, 2006, SurgeTV will begin broadcasting reruns of Hogan Knows Best and original WWE programming. Filling out the early morning hours will be the ground-breaking American (English language channel) debut of Lucha Libre sporting events. SurgeTV will continue publishing Sci Fi magazine, which will remain uneffected by the format changes taking place on air. SurgeTV is a television network where extreme action can be found. SurgeTV fuels the adrenaline of viewers with original series and events, blockbuster movies and classic wrestling programming, as well as a dynamic Web site (www.scifi.com) and magazine. Launched in 1992, and currently in 85 million homes, SurgeTV is a network of NBC Universal, one of the world's leading media and entertainment companies. |

I was in Canada last week and they have the "Space Channel" Which is pretty damn cool.. Cant find it here at all..
SciFi sucks balls most of the time anyway. This new channel will die a horrid death in less than a year. More "rasslin" isn't gonna cut it.
I have three scifi/horror/mystery channels available on digital cable. Suck it SurgeTV. |
The Sc-Fi channel here in Britain show soft porn from 10pm…
<Spock Mode ON>…It's a docking manouvere but not as we know it Captain… <Spock Mode OFF> ANdy |
That's really not a funny joke. I freakin hate wrestling! Who wants to watch two grown men in spandex rolling around on the floor?!? If my aversion to such things places me squarely in the "nerd demographic," I am good with that.
Though, I could do without the "insert normal animal here: insert retarded amplifier here" movies about freakishly large animals. Matt |
Stupid Stupid Stupid. I hope they go belly up and some compeditor creates a new Sci Fi channel. Why would you $h*t can something that is successfull? Start a new channel but don't F*&k up a good existing channel.
So what you are saying is that these "Xtreme" pussies are going to force me to be social on Friday nights?
Yeah, not going to happen. Isn't there wrestling on like 35 other channels on cable/sat? Is it too much to ask to have one channel dedicated to good, high quality nerd entertainment? |
"sci-fi" is just too dated and the average person associates it with a bunch of mega dorks. probably a good move if it develops more viewers for the network.
Considering some of the wonderfull programs they've had lately I can understand it.
I mean really "Who wants to be a superhero?" WTH is up with that tripe? If it weren't for BG, and the SG sagas, they would have died a horrible death years ago. About the only good new one they have out now is Eureka. |
rasslin is pretty much what marked the death of SCI-fi. screw em. the made for tv movies they have all sucked ass anyway. my dog has better cgi skilz than some of those shows.
You mean WWWF wrastling is not real! I agree, it sucks like a $10 whore and belongs on soething like the 'Ghey guys grabbing each others tackle' Channel. ANdy |
I'm fine with changing the name if they want too but leave the content of the channel unchanged. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!! |
Fucking gay!!!
So they're going to put the Scifi channel and WWE in a bender, put it on high, create an abortion, and call in serge? How will they fit on re-runs of WWF and ECW between all the paid programming. I guess we just found out that this will be the last season of Battlestar Galactica. Isn't wrestling on seven nights a week already? ~Dg84 |
Most of the week they don't show anything worth watching anyways. Eureka and the Friday programming are the only things worthwhile.
And with the decision to cut SG-1, Friday isn't going to be what it used to be. Between the rasslin and those g@#-awful SciFi original movies, that channel is in a death spiral that can only end in a most glorious fireball. |
You need no further evidence of why our society is doomed. |
+1 I have a feeling the "new" channel will flop. How fucking stupid could they be? Oh well the only thing I cared for on Sci-Fi was Battlestar Galactica. |
Eight true words right there. I'd be excited if they were trying to resurrect other series, like maybe Firefly (picking up where it left off) or getting Strczynski to do another TV series. Maybe some Supermarionation. You know, SCIENCE FICTION... They might as well have renamed it "The Ruinous Abortion Network" for all I care or will watch it. We are seeing the deconstruction of something good here, just like what happened with TechTV. |
+1 Sci-Fi died when they cancelled FARSCAPE. Fuck Bonnie Hammer and her cunt ass. What is this cancellation of SG-1 you speak of??? |
I never got into the Stargate series, but I love BSG and, in spite of myself, really enjoy the new Dr. Who. I hope they both remain -- they're both on the announced fall schedule, but if the above goes through who knows?...
ETA: D'oh! I forgot Eureka was on SciFi, too. We've been watching it and like it as well... |
Heard on the radio yesterday that MGM is pissed at SciFi dumping SG-1 and is looking for a new outlet for the show.
If the OP story is for real, SciFi can kiss my ass. This has all the makings of another TechTV/G4 galactic level clusterfuck written all over it. |
So this already worthless channel will be even worse in the future?
This is really sad news for me. I hate the tripe that is moving into the SciFi channel. ECW is utter garbage. Who Wants To Be A Superhero is crap too. Looks like it's time to head back to the History channel.

Also coming soon: Watch the return of Hulk Hogan in the exiting series finale of BattleStar Galactica, in which Hulk Hogan utilizes his X-terme wrestling skiills to eliminate the cylons.. After that is the series finale of Stargate: Atlantis where X-treme 'female' wrestler China will whip out 'her' penis, sickening the wraith so much, they just go off to commit suicide. Tune in next tuesday for the season finale of Eureaka, where former 'wrestler' Captain Lou Albano will create a time machine and pretend to wrestle with former president Abraham Lincoln... sigh.. While its true theres not much to sci-fi worth watching right now (and in the forseeable future) SG1 is gone, BSG probably isnt too far behind SG1, what the fuck happened to Dr. Who? I can see this new 'Surge' tv following the same path as another formerly good channel. Remember when TNN became SpikeTV? a short few years later and what do they have? 5 hours of Star Trek daily, 3 hours of CSI reruns daily, old Max X reruns, and really, really old reruns of 'Worlds Stupidest Most Played Out Police Chases'.. ohh and wrestling... Sad. Ill be down to watching 2 channels in the very near furture. (that is until Comedy Central renames itself to POOTV and the Discovery channel renames itself "The Discovery Channel.....With Wrestlers!!") |
Fark forums are reporting it as an elaborate hoax!
Thank GoD!!! |
Too bad HBO couldnt buy SG, BSG and SG atlantis. They could add it to the schedule and keep us in good tv all year long. From one goodshow to the other.....
Think about that... Sopranos ending, deadwood starting. Deadwood ending, BSG starting BSG ending SG and SG atlantis starting...... Back to sopranos...Though this is it for the mob I here. |
The irony is that SG-1 STARTED on Showtime and was picked up by SciFi after they decided to drop it. |
Glad I DVR'd all the Kolchak episodes, the real Night Stalker that is with Darren McGavin.
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on google about the switch/swap. Nothing on Clusty, nothing on Ixquick. Sounds like a hoax to me.....
The only time I've ever watched Sci-Fi was when MST3K aired Saturday afternoons. Since it was canceled I've removed that POS channel from the on-screen guide. Why the hell would I want to watch "Mant" whatever that half man/half ant movie was titled?!
I bet you are hoping for a NASCAR channel. |
Anyone know if you can watch the video downloads from ITunes without an IPOD? I'm not even sure what format they send it in.
If so, and if this is true, can't really tell, but looks not, I would probably drop the dish and just download episodes. They need to put BSG and Eureka up as well as SG1 and SGA up for downloads. |
True. I had totally forgot about that. |
Isn't the Sci Fi network the one that airs all the stupid John Edwards "Talk to the Dead" crap?
The Biggest Douche in the Universe |
If you insist on watching moronic pro wrestling, theres more than enough on the Spike channel already. Sci Fi channel is for SCI FI. What idiots. Maybe if they made sure they broadcast half way decent sci fi movies instead of every grade B sci fi flick out there they'd have more viewers.
You can watch them with the iTunes player. |
Or, if you believe him, the biggest douche in two universes. |
I don't recall seeing that on Sci-Fi - but they had that show TAPS about the 'New Jersey Ghost Hunters'. |
That's the first thing I thought of as well. Also,
It's like TNN (The Nashville Network) becoming the The National Network.
Dumb idea. They will lose their core. |
Plus you could see all the cylon chicky-snacks naked. |
