Go down to the dragstrip and hang out with the old coots.  You need to find the stinkiest, orneriest, most obnoxious jerks at the track.  They know where all the good stuff is stashed but they won't tell just everyone.  After all, if they did then it would all be gone by now, wouldn't it?  So yeah, become best buds with them and in 10 years or so you'll gain their respect and they'll tell you.  Good luck!

I have talked to some folks who are near what you stated.

There is some truth to your comments.

LOL, choose your words carefully when searching.

You missed out on the super secret handshake and wink, wink, information!

Very few 354 or and even less 392 exist any more. Even the nostalgia cars run aluminum engines, next to no OEM Chrysler parts. The 392 blocks were very weak when you built a fuel motor from them. We used to line bore in a big aluminum girdle to try to keep the bottom end together.

Both the 354 and 392 are worth a bunch just to guys restoring   the old 300's.

Actually, I remember reading that the aftermarket support isn't as good for hemis and that a 440 could be built just as strong.  But they don't have the same mystique, do they?

Didn't they start making new hemi blocks some years back?  I thought I remembered reading that, too.  Not the new hemis - blocks the same as the old hemi engines.

What the heck are you trying to build, anyway?

LOL, The last guy I asked was a missing a bunch of his face (cancer?) most of his teeth, and all of his marbles!
Had a scraggly beard with little strips of rags tied in it to "keep the witches away".
Led me to the back of the yard, where cars were falling into the creek due to erosion, and yup, another Desoto.
It did have a cool ass skull hood ornament I still wish got!

'ETA:
FWIW, I'm old enough to remember when you could get one (Chrysler) from J C Whitney!

I think my brother still  has a 413 out in the pile!

I was under the impression that they were scarce too.

OP..what are you wanting to build? as others have said, a 392 is pretty rare nowadays, and even the smaller bore is rare and they command $$$$...not to mention, they really arnt very strong if you are really leaning on one...

Best bang for the buck horsepower..new gm small block or big block..either thru a reputable builder or thru gm racing...

new engines have some desirable features, including modern port/chamber designs, better build materials, stronger, 1 piece rear main seals, better hp/torque numbers per CI, and better fuel economy/drivability with roller cams and fuel injection...what are you wanting to build? hot street car for straight-line acceleration? carving corners? track car/sunny day cruiser? brutal thumping HP monster?

Straight line high HP acceleration.

Handling will be left up to the suspension components.

Well, this will give you an idea...

http://www.chevrolet.com/performance/crate-engines.html

Now for what you are talking about the the LXR454R sounds perfect for you..be forewarned  quality engines are spendy..these prices are actually probably cheaper then what it would cost thru a professional engine builder and these come with a warranty......... Last big hp (2000+) motor I built myself back in the early 90's set me back about 40 k for the long block..and I did all the port work and much of the prep work....

Good luck trying to find a vintage hemi. I would say you best source would be an old school bus or dump truck. I have seen both for sale locally here with their old hemi motors still intact.

My dad and I tracked down an old 392 and pulled it from the wreaked Imperial it was in originally.

My suggestion is just start calling junk yards and asking about 57-58 Imperials and New Yorkers.

I found one when I was in high school behind a buddy's house, it was a Chrysler Industrial 392. They wouldn't sell it so it rotted

Went with a 440, it doesn't have the Hemi mystic, but it can make more torque than God.

ETA: I was dead set on one once I found it, reality is though the crate motors out there today are awesome. If you're dead set on a Hemi, save your pennies and buy the 528cui Hemi crate motor.

I seem to remember my pop saying that Chrysler had to buy the "Hemi" badge back from an outfit that was building aluminum HEMIs for marine applications. If that is true then there is probably a company producing brand new 426 hemi's out of aluminum.

Indy makes a "lowdeck" Hemi aluminum block nowdays.

It has a much shorter deck height than the early motors, so it will fit into modern vehicles with a limited amount of space. The original heads will fit, but uses a modern intake and headers made my Indy.

Big bucks, but off the scale on the cool factor.

Wow they are neat but you could pick up a ls3 with 6 speed tranny and all the electronics to make it run for that price or less.   Or get an ls ls9 with a warranty.

about 15K...

if you really want a molar hemi, why would you want a 392?

Well how much would it be to overpay for an old one, and have it torn down, hot tanked and professionally rebuilt?

As far as the time investment goes I would just buy one with a warranty and bolt that sucker in.

In the early 80's I found a 392 hemi in a dodge school bus . They were also used as industrial engines . I know where an early 60's chevy truck is right now with a 409 in it .

What is the appeal of an old engine?

Do they do vintage class drags?

It seems like most modern engines with a computer and fuel injection would blow most of them right out of the water as far out of the box performance goes.

440 can be had for less. Parts are more available and less $$$ if you break it. Stronger too from what a Mopar Cartel Member told me.

392's are hard to find.  And, as others have already pointed out - not that strong.

Donovan is still in business.  Start with a 417 block if you want to make serious horsepower:
