My oldest daughter (15) is wanting a laptop for Christmas. I have had good luck with Dells, but am open to anything. Where are the great deals on basic laptop computers?

I just bought a Toshiba L-305 S5907 from Amazon for a tad under 700 bucks.

Trust me, you're gonna go nuts shopping for the best deals.

$300 is the lowest price point at Best Buy and Wally Mart. Don't have the link but the walmart notebook had 2g or 3g ram 200g hd, etc. very good deal, I think anyway.

I bought a Dell for my parents for their anniversary off of Ebay using the Live.com 25% back offer.

It came factory sealed with the remainder of the one year warranty which started in late October. It was buy it now for ~650-700, and after I receive the rebate it will be under $500. This was about a week and a half ago. My parents are very happy with the laptop and it not an older/stripped down model. It actually has an HDMI output on it, which I though was pretty cool.

ETA: There were many like this on there, I would definitely take a look at it before you buy.

Based on my professional and personal experience with Dell laptops (10 different machines, total)... not a Dell.

watch this laptop. it is 649 now but i bought it for 499. its a great fucking deal. 250gb HD, 3gb RAM, AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core, DVD writer, Multi card reader, nice bright screen. read the reviews...

wait till after thanksgiving and the fucker will probably be back at 499

its a great deal at 499, average at 649.

ETA: all the new laptops run Vista, which needs memory, if you get a deal at 349 or 399 make sure you see how much RAM you are getting 1GB aint enough, the more the merrier

dont get all crazy about some cheap netbooks or that ACER without the optical disk drive, unless you are pretty sure that fits your use, i wanna watch DVDs so it wouldnt work for me. might work for others.
