I have a bidness trip that I am taking this weekend and will be traveling with a couple gunz. I don't want to fly and deal with all that bullshiite at the airport, so I am going to drive.
The bike is a FZ1 and pretty comfy to ride plus good on fuel about 42mpg. The car would be my Jeep and with the bigger tires gets bas mileage. The bike has a nice tank bag and I have the gear to stay warm. I can fit a 16" AR in the tank bag  Weather will be in the 50's when I take off and will get into the 70's at my destination(Phoenix). Supposedly a 30% chance of rain on sunday when I return. Sucks riding in the rain.  Would you take the bike and get near 50 mpg or take the Jeep? On a budget for the first time in my life cause I am trying to swing two mortgages.

I don't quite understand why you would consider taking a bike on a 1000 mile trip when you know there is a chance of rain (not to mention transporting firearms)?
I could understand a Vegas to Phoenix ride but 1,000 miles? |

1000 miles is a long ways on a bike, particularly a bike with a sport bike riding position. Depending on your height your legs'll be aching by the time you get home. I've had to stop every few hours to sort of hop around because my legs were killing me when I used to do stuff like that.
1000 miles in a Jeep on the highway ain't no fun either... |

So......at least 8 hours one way?? I get worn down after about 350 mi. on a bike these days, i did 525 mi. nonstop on a 1974 XLCH one time, . But, i was much younger then , and besides, that was all i owned for 4 1/2 years. That said, TAKE THE JEEP !

Mix between a sport bike and cruiser. I have done 500 miles an it was comfortable compared to HD Fat Boy I rode from Ca to Az once...that trip had me reeling in pain.

Take the Jeep that way, you can do the "wave" to all the other jeep owners except those like me, who own a Liberty, and of course Cherokee owners, We're not "real jeeps" so, no wave for us...At least that's what I got out of the "Jeep wave" thread,........Seriously, 1000 miles on a bike, this time of year? You're a better man than me....

Ride.
I went coast to coast and back on my bike a couple Summers ago and it was a blast. Wasn't on a bike considered confortable for long range rides, but it was much easier than I had thought. 1K isn't much at all. FZ1 riding position isn't as bad as the Super Sport bikes. |

Where are you driving from? Any mountains? Flagstaff? San Diego? Those mountains will humble you with cold, this time of year, and it will be even more fun if it rains. I am a biker, but I don't do cold very well. |

Taking the 10 from Lost Angeles. Temps will be around 50 when I leave and Phoenix will be in the high 60's low 70's. No mountains, just desert most of the way. I factored in about 300 miles because I have a friend in Showlow I hope to visit after I leave Phoenix then hitting the 40 back to the 15. They have nice gear that makes cold riding more tolerable these days. I am taking the bike.

Rent a nice comfortable car on a weekend deal and use that. My Pontiac Grand Prix gets 30+ mpg is comfortable and soetimes it's just nice to cruise along in comfort. Longest drive I ever did was a single day 1078 miles in late 2004 from western NY to Ft. Benning GA. Did that three times that year.

pulled in at 10pm lastnight with over 800 miles on the bike roundtrip.
somewhere in Az:  also visited Mecca:  My ass left me somewhere between blythe and Quartzite. Almost had to draw down in Blythe, too All in all the ride was very comfortable and the bike ran like a top. |

what bike is that, lawdog a yamaha roadstar? The ride was great. Had a great time riding and I even got to do some shooting in Az. with some cool dudes. Will be doing it again soon. |
