I came across a little small town gun shop yesterday while out for a Sunday drive.  It was closed, but through the front window I saw a rifle marked as "SKS Paratrooper".  Short barreled.  Blond stock in like new condition, $174.  Bayo had been removed, but lug was still there.  I couldn't see the bottom of the gun to see if it had a standard 10 round internal mag or if it was a short barreled SKS D that takes AK mags.  Good deal or no?

They go for around $450+ and they're not all that abundant, so I'd run my ass down there in a hurry, were I you.

Do you really have to ask??

Even if it was called an "SKS Widowmaker" it would still be an SKS.  Therefore, no-go.

Well, looks like I'm going for it.  No, I won't tell where the store is :)  I'll just be sure to be there when the store opens.

Would it be shameless to ask for a discount because the bayo is missing?

It is now mine.  I got the owner to drop the price from $174 to $164 because the bayo and cleaning rod are missing.  At least that was my shameless excuse for dickering with him.  The total was $173.02 out the door.    I love this thing!  It's so handy compared to my M59/66 Yugo SKS.  It is a Norinco made for civilian export.  So, no arsenal mark.  Wood is in awesome shape.  Only a few light scratches.  The bluing is great.  The bore is like new.  The bolt carrier has some light black spotting, but nothing a little fine steel wool won't buff out.

I've owned two now, and while they aren't my first choice for a 7.62 rifle - I cannot understand the hate folks have for them.

Does it have the stamped or milled trigger guard?  I can't view the photos here at work.

Either way, that is a great deal.  I paid about the same for mine back in the mid 90s.  Mine did not come with a bayonet and the cleaning rod has always been loose.  That is probably why yours is missing.

I don't think they made any milled. It's a made for US export gun, should be a pinned barrel too.

Wish I had one for that price!

If a gun manufacturer sat down and tried to make a gun of that quality today, they would have to sell it for $1000+.

$164 actually

The last owner installed a 1" buttpad extension.  I pulled it off the rifle, but the stock screws don't work with the original buttplate.  Will have to order a few.
