ATHENS (Reuters) - Parts of southeastern Europe remained in the grip of the worst winter weather for decades on Sunday while in Poland thousands of soldiers were put on alert to deal with flooding in case of a sudden thaw.

Thousands of villages across neighbors Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria in southeastern Europe were cut off after freak winter storms blanketed the region.

Two men were found dead in icy conditions in Istanbul on Saturday and two more froze to death in southeastern Turkey. Bulgaria and Greece, where an elderly woman also died due to the cold, declared a state of emergency in some areas.
