A Glendale police officer was fatally shot in the area of 60th Avenue just north of Camelback Road early Monday morning.

It happened shortly after 7:30 a.m., after what started as a routine traffic stop on Oregon Avenue and quickly escalated between Glendale police and a car full of wanted men.

The officer, Anthony Holly, 24, was shot in the face. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where doctors later pronounced him dead.

Other police officers from both Phoenix and Glendale were arriving at the hospital all morning.

“We are all grieving,” said Glendale Police Chief Steve Conrad. “We’ve lost an officer, we’ve lost a friend.”

This was the first time a Glendale police officer had been killed in the line of duty, Conrad said.

“This is a tough day, a tough day for all of us,” Conrad said.

Holly was a two-year veteran of the department.

Witnesses at the scene told 3TV they heard several gunshots.

A male suspect was quickly taken into custody in front of a nearby home. A woman in a car that was stopped was taken into custody a short time later.

The male suspect was wounded and taken to the hospital. His condition is not known, but it is believed that his injuries are not life threatening.

Three suspects are in custody in relation to the shooting.

Now this happens. I'm at a loss for words. I didn't know Officer Holly, but my prayers will be with family and friends.
