EVANSVILLE — Firefighters responded to a FedEx truck that caught fire on the West Side around 1:30 p.m.

The truck was headed south near the 2700 block of Red Bank Road when the front of the truck caught fire. The driver, who was not identified, was unharmed and managed to stop the vehicle in a front yard after rolling backwards down a hill.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Company spokesman David Westrick said he had "never seen this happen before” but was glad the driver was safe.

All of the truck’s packages were destroyed. It is FedEx policy that the company will reimburse the first $100 to the shipper for the lost package, Westrick said. Any package valued over $100 requires a "declared value” before hand in order to be reimbursed for the full amount.

Looks like a Navistar T-444E powerplant, AKA 7.3 Powerstroke.

They catch fire sometimes.

Correct. Fed-Ex Ground drivers are not employees. They are sub-contractors, and own their own trucks.

What kind of tires are on that thing ? Everything that could burn is gone .. but the front tires look relatively
unharmed .. and are still inflated ??

Looks like a case of Spontaneous Human Combustion

Yep. Those International/Grumman Olson vans have T-444E (7.3L Power Stroke) engines. Ask me how I know.

Most of the Utilimasters you see are on Freightliner chassis and have 5.9L Cummins powerplants, though some of the newer Utilimaster FedEx Ground vans have 6.7L Cummins and 4.3L Mercedes (4 cylinder) engines.

That is odd that none of the tires burned. Had to have been a very hot fire.

I actually have a package going to Evansville today or tomorrow, so this is relevant to my interests.

Pretty sure it's UPS, though.
