Mayor Giuliani says gun seizures aided in lower crime rates
By Associated Press, 8/2/2001 06:27
NEW YORK (AP) Thousands of gun seizures have played a big part in the
city's lowered crime rates, the mayor said Wednesday.
So far this year, police seized 3,217 guns during arrests, compared to
2,586 seizures in all of 2000, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said at a news
conference. There were 200 gun slayings this year, compared to 251 over
the same period last year, a 25 percent decrease, he said.
The gun seizures explain why crime has dropped significantly in the last
seven years, Giuliani said.
More than 90,000 guns have been seized since 1994, Giuliani said. About 56
percent of murders this year were committed with guns, a 20 percent drop
since 1994, when about 75 percent of homicide victims were killed by
bullets, according to city statistics.
Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said that the 3,000 guns recently
collected by the department would be melted down and sold as scrap metal.
