Mayor Giuliani says gun seizures aided in lower crime rates
By Associated Press, 8/2/2001 06:27

NEW YORK (AP) Thousands of gun seizures have played a big part in the
city's lowered crime rates, the mayor said Wednesday.
So far this year, police seized 3,217 guns during arrests, compared to
2,586 seizures in all of 2000, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said at a news
conference. There were 200 gun slayings this year, compared to 251 over
the same period last year, a 25 percent decrease, he said.
The gun seizures explain why crime has dropped significantly in the last
seven years, Giuliani said.
More than 90,000 guns have been seized since 1994, Giuliani said. About 56
percent of murders this year were committed with guns, a 20 percent drop
since 1994, when about 75 percent of homicide victims were killed by
bullets, according to city statistics.
Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said that the 3,000 guns recently
collected by the department would be melted down and sold as scrap metal.

in all fairness to the good mayor, enforcing existing laws is better than 1000 new ones...

Hmmm.  Doesn't say who these guns were confiscated from (felons, juveniles, law abiding people).
Also doesn't say how many were "ballistically tested" to determine if they were used in the ultimate felony of murder or not.

New York's mayor is no more a Republican than Bill Clinton is a moderate Democrat.  We don't need him to run for or be appointed to any state or national government job.

This man has never been a friend of gun owners and never will be.

i'm not saying i'll vote for his presidency, i'm just saying in a lib-dominated state like this pathetic one, it could be ALOT worse. [:)]

Hate to complain about using a single statistic, but he's only looking at one specific cause of violent crime.  I would prefer an overall assessment of violent crime in NY, and then break it down into specific statistics.

Is he claiming that NY is seeing a overall reduction in violent crime?

How much crack did Rudy seize?  Did that contribute to a drop in the crime rate?

All that and we're still some of the lowest paid cops in the country!  I love this job (and Dept.) but we really ought to be paid like NY's Finest...

FattyM4 and you NY boys,
Illinois is no better than NY, and Chicago's Mayor Daley is worse than Giuliani. They interpret gun statistics the way they want to and the local liberal media eats it up.
