Yes I am gettting neutered. Been married eight years, two beautiful kids, NO plans for more...ever. I'm 34. So give me your war stories and more importantly, your advise. I need some good questions to take to the urologist.

Most go well (95%)

My buddy got an infection.  Laid up for 8 months, essentially.  Permenant pain & meds for life.

Think hard.  (pun intended)

I had one about 12 years.  Got snipped on
Friday night, walked around with a reusable
ice pack when it hurt over the next week.

No problems, should have done it when I was
18.  I always referred to this procedure as
"Turning a functional model into a sport
model".

haha, you'll be shooting blanks from now on. [:D]

might want to reconsider as I hear it's almost impossible to reverse.

My sisters husband (the lousy @$$!) got snipped 10 months before my sister gave birth to their twins.  They couldn't bag it or wait the few weeks until he was only shooting blanks. [stick]

Make sure you follow the doctors orders if you don't want any more children.

Just make sure you want it forever since it is hard or impossible to undo.  I've worked with several guys that had this done.  The procedure wasn't that bad, but in each of their cases, their wives talked them into it as a last piece of revenge before leaving them.  One poor guy I work with turns 31 next month and just got re-married.  He can't see his current kids (wife moved to a resort in Mexico with her new boyfriend that is 40+ years older than her), and he can't have kids with his new wife.  When he woke-up the morning after the procedure, she was gone with the kids, both of their cars, and most everything of value from the house.  She timed it just right knowing he wouldn't wake-up from the pain medication.  Again, if she is insisting that you have it, think about why.z

I had a vasectomy two weeks ago.  Listen to your md, when he says to take it easy for a few days.  You will definitely need to keep ice on your jewels for a few days.  The longer you keep ice on them and lay low, the better off you will be.  The prospect of having orange- to- grapefruit sized jewels, kept me on my back watching tv for a few days.
This is my second vasectomy....the first did not work. Pain was not too bad,  I would encourage a shot of 'something' before the procedure.  Helps you relax.
All in all,  It was worth it.  The cost is the same that I currently pay for just two-weeks worth of child support.

Will it be possible to revert you from Post-Ban[:(] to Pre-Ban[}:D] if you should want to down the road??

I know that would be my biggest concern!!!

What about just "firing out of battery"[;)]? It works for me. Well sometimes...

Later!

I concur with Duckdog...follow the advice of your doc.  I had mine done 11 years ago and it was a breeze...BUT I did exactly what I was told to do...went home and iced down, didn't do anything over the weekend and took it easy the next week.  A buddy of mine tried to "tough it out" and do his normal "stuff"....ended up with a lot of pain and a longer healing period.

Good luck!!

It's not so bad, you'll get some excellent narcotics following the procedure that you won't need for the pain. I had mine done on Friday, sat around in loose pants for the weekend and was back to work Monday. Never required an ice pack or anything.

Get your sperm count checked after. Have a friend in Seattle that had a third Vas Defrens (spelling?). He found out the hard way.

Don't be afraid... You've never been so alive as when you watch smoke curl up off your testicles!

Well, I don't know what his MD said, but part of my process was to bring in a "sample" about 10 days later and they would check for 'swimmers'... [:D]Phone call the next day with results of ZERO [:)]

When I was a med student I help a doc do one. He hit an abnormal artery and wow. The blood hit the ceiling!  I am would be glad to do your wifes tubal!  But it is major surgery versus an office procedure.  Sometimes they do permanently jam and become unshootable forever!

I just did this over Memorial day, the best advice that I can give you is to stay ON YOUR ASS the next day. I didnt and I paid for it by taking longer to be pain free with no swelling. I had monday off but went to work tues and didnt make it 10 minutes before I said screw this. Just spend Saturday rotating the frozen peas, cold beers, the odd shot of Jagermiester and the pain pills doc will give you. You will recover quicker. The pups who recover quicker also heal up better from other stuff to if ya know what I mean. I did it at 41 and it took a full week to have the swelling go down and soreness to the point that I was good as new. Then again when your working with large equipment longer recovery time is to be expected [;)]. Anyway my advice is to take it easy, you have nothing to prove by running around and making it harder on yourself. Wifey should be MORE than willing to cater to your every need and bring you cold peas and beer!!
Ask you doc if he gives anything to take the edge off before you show up at the office. I got a 10mg Vallium, sure helped my outlook while a man was cutting on my bag.

Not what you want to hear, but:  don't do it.

A former coworker of mine had a vasectomy.  Some time after that, his only child died in a house fire.  His wife divorced him, and he eventually found someone else.  He was still childless last I heard, and very unhappy about it all.

Fires happen, as do car accidents, psychotic kidnappers, and drownings.  Why do something which is usually irreversible when you can use condoms, pills, diaphragms, foams, oral sex, and rhythm to avoid getting her pregnant anyway?

Go for it!  It's the best thing you'll ever do for your sex life.  Not having to worry about another bungle of joy makes BOTH of you enjoy it more!

I was sitting on a metal box on the passenger side of a Mack semi tractor about 12 hours after having it done.  We did about 400 miles that day.  I would not recommend this for anyone else!  I ended up with a minor infection, but it really wasn't any big deal.  Some antibiotics and a few extra days of healing.

Don't let the breeders talk you out of it.  If your life changes so drastically that you want another child, there are lots of alternatives; adoption, AI, your good buddies at ar15.com [}:)]

Don't do it man!!!  You'll get fat and lay around all day, not to mention you won't hike your leg to pee anymore!  No, seriously, I had it done 2 years ago in Sept.  Haven't had any problems since the 2nd week.  I tried to do too much at work and strained my "stuff", bleeding into the sack, bad infection. Advice:  Take it easy, if you have a couple of vacation days, use them.  Frozen peas are a good reusable ice pack that can be somewhat shaped for your comfort.  Be sure it is what YOU want, reversal is difficult.(but not impossible)
good luck

I have heard that most men are happier with an operation called an ADDADICTOMY.

I'm a surgeon and do 2-3 vasectomy operations/wk.

Get a surgeon or urologist who does this operation often.

"No Incision Technique"--both sides done through a single puncture,(that is spread open)less chance of bleeding complication and very small wound.

Protection for 8 wks before first sample--about 20x to clean out the pipes.

There is 5-7% chance of lingering pain from overcongestion. Improves in months.

Should have less than 1% chance of significant bleeding in scrotum--"eggplant" purple swelling--2-3 month recovery.

Nearly all are back to work in 2 days.

This is what I had, from the leading specialist who's done umpteen-million of 'em (he was demonstrating the procedure to another md on me) He also wrote 'the' or 'a' book on it.

anyway, like I mentioned before, no problems what so ever.  and try as I can, It won't make babies [:)]

Had it done when I was 25... I'm 40 something now.  It went exactly as described previous.  Single incision on the right side, cut and cauterized, 2 day of sitting on ice.  Wore loose fitting pants for a week or so and that was that.  The discomfort isn't too bad actually.

And as for the rest of it... smartest thing I ever did.  Life is so much more pleasure when the potential of breeding is removed... [;)]

I had it done about seven years ago, after the birth of our twins.

They told me that once I had the procedure, I'd be calmer, live longer, not pee on the carpet, not get in fights and not hump the guests legs anymore.

I really miss the leg humping part...[:(]

By all means, FOLLOW YOUR M.D.'S ADVICE!  My dad had one done about 20 years ago.  He was still feeling pretty good from the anesthetic after the surgery and decided to go play 9 holes of golf.  Really bad decision making!  His balls turned black as coal and swelled up to the size of my fist.  He said it was like having a case of the blue balls you couldn't get rid of.  Took him several days to get over it.  So, avoid golf or other stenuous exercise for a few days after surgery.  Of couse, I never consider an afternoon at the range with my AR's to be "stenous exercise", and the surgery is a great excuse for a few days off from work to go to the range when it might not be so crowded.  Good luck and stay well!
