Ernst August's family's weapons may be illegal

30 September 2005

HANOVER, GERMANY - The family of troubled Prince Ernst August of Hanover may face illegal gun possession charges after police discovered that 37 items in the family collection of muskets, pistols and rifles were still in working order.

Prosecutor Thomas Klinge said Friday police scientists were still checking the weapons, which are listed in an online Sotheby's catalogue for an 11-day antique auction starting next week at the prince's fairytale Marienburg castle south of Hanover in Germany.

Public viewing of 20,000 items including cannons and suits of armour being sold off by the Royal House of Hanover began Friday.

The vendors are two sons of Prince Ernst August,
who is married to Princess Caroline of Monaco and who was given a suspended jail sentence by a German court last year for assault. He is descended from the Hanoverian kings of Britain.

The prosecutor said it was illegal to own unregistered guns, even antique ones. Police seized the weapons Tuesday and were investigating who owned them, whether they were covered by any permit and whether they were dangerous.

What good is being royalty if you can't have a few unregistered muskets lying around?

ETA - I'll bet those guns have some great history behind them. I hate to think of what their fate will be.

He should get on arfcom hkpro, raise an army/militia, and claim that his great ancestor was manipulated or forged and never actually gave up power to the democratic state so he is still an absolutist ruler, and if they want to do anything about it they can lay siege to his castle.

Have Black Forest Keebler Elves in his castle manufacturing goodies for anyone that wants to come defend it, in das King August's Full Auto Wunderlund!

What are the Germans going to do? The last time they picked up a gun an invaded thier neighbors the whole continent went to shit.

I think they have that backwards. The British monarchy is descended from the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (Hanover).

WTF. If he demilled them (maybe not the correct term but you know what I mean) he probably would have gotten nailed to destroying antiques. He's just luck he didn't have powder to go with them. Would've not nailed for explosives.

You're right.
After the Stuarts were all gone, they had to find a new guy.
Traced things wayyyyyy back, and found the Hanover line.
George the First never visited England and didn't speak English.

As for the topic at hand - I guess the German's didn't learn that gun registration was bad the first go round.

The Germans used to be badasses. But after the WW2, the only badasses left joined the Foreign Legion.

I have personally seen a small part of the collection of the Windsors. By small part, I mean probably 1,000 or so antique firearms. I wish it was my collection!!

They are arranged (along with swords) on the walls of the families residence at Windsor castle. I was there in 1998. If you ever get to England, the ONE must see weapons related sight is the Imperial War Museum, followed by RAF Duxford.

Yes, the Imperial War Museum's been on my list. Elgin Marbles, St Paul's, Canterbury, I have a list of all the usual suspects when I make it there.

What is RAF Duxford? WWII museum? Old planes?
