I guess target identification wasn't part of his mental checklist.

Georgia Man Killed Wife Thinking She Was a Burglar

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. —  A man shot and killed his wife at their apartment, apparently thinking she was an intruder who was breaking in, police said.

Clayton County police found Andrea Henry laying in the walkway in front of their apartment just before 5 p.m. Tuesday. She had been shot in the neck.

Andrea Henry and her 22-year-old daughter were entering the apartment when her husband, Horace Henry, 60, fired a shot from a .38-caliber revolver through the slightly open door, Clayton County Deputy Chief Tim Robinson said.

"He apparently didn't know that she and their daughter had walked outside for a few minutes," Robinson said. "When he heard someone at the door, he said he called out, 'Who's there?' but he said no one answered. He thought she was an intruder and fired his gun."

Andrea Henry was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where she was pronounced dead.

Police believe the shooting was accidental. Horace Henry, who has not been charged, is disabled and retired.

Robinson said police had no record of domestic problems at the home in the past. Authorities were continuing to investigate, he said.

It's a lot cheaper than a divorce, I hope he keeps his story straight.

That's the only explaination that makes sense.  60 years old is still young.  100% in contol of your faculties is the norm.  WAY too young to claim senility unless they are aflicted with mad cow or something...

Good shoot! Or at least that's what I've been told here.

Of course, I feel differently.

I have forgotten/been unaware on occasion that one of my kids is home. You call out a couple times and they don't answer...then you start to worry fast.

Not that target ID isn't absolutely essential, but a little bit of approaching footsteps without an answer to a shouted question can get you going quickly.

Don't think this scenario couldn't ever happen to you, especially as you age.

or posted here about keeping a pistol with him all the time just in case a home invasion robbery happened while he was on the shitter.

Assuming it wasn't a conspiracy to kill his own wife, that would sure be hard to live with.
