I agree with you about the Left seeing them as essential. However they aren't viewed, IMHO, as natural predators, but as tools.

When one worships the state and wishes to see it become all encompassing, then one soon realizes fear is an effective lever to achieve such a goal.

Hence the two pronged leftist assault on gun rights and law enforcement/incarceration. Leave people helpless before the criminals you let roam free,

Most people with more than two active brain cells to rub together will not walk around at 2:00AM anywhere near an area that they even think they may get mugged in.
