A followup to the infamous Wrenches 101.  We need a poster "daisyturbine" now.

Every gas turbine has three basic sections: the compressor, the combustion chamber (or burner), and the turbine.  The compressor compresses air to a higher temperature and density.  The burner receives that air, adds fuel and then a spark to burn it.  The hot, expanding air drives the turbine.  The turbine is shafted to the compressor.  Both the turbine and the compressor spin at the same RPM, in the case of a single spool (shaft) engine.

There are 4 basic types of gas turbine engine.
There are two compressor types: centrifugal and axial.



The turbojet engine : Turbojet engine derives its thrust by highly accelerating a mass of air , all of which goes through the engine. Since a high " jet " velocity is required to obtain an acceptable of thrust, the turbine of turbo jet is designed to extract only enough power from the hot gas stream to drive the compressor and accessories . All of the propulsive force (100% of thrust ) produced by a jet engine derived from exhaust gas.  

The turboprop engine : Turboprop engine derives its propulsion by the conversion of the majority of gas stream energy into mechanical power to drive the compressor , accessories , and the propeller load. The shaft on which the turbine is mounted drives the propeller through the propeller reduction gear system . Approximately 90% of thrust comes from propeller and about only 10% comes from exhaust gas.

The turbofan engine : Turbofan engine has a duct enclosed fan mounted at the front of the engine and driven either mechanically at the same speed as the compressor , or by an independent turbine located to the rear of the compressor drive turbine . The fan air can exit seperately from the primary engine air , or it can be ducted back to mix with the primary's air at the rear . Approximately morethan 75% of thrust comes from fan and less than 25% comes from exhaust gas.  

The turboshaft engine : Turboshaft engine derives its propulsion by the conversion of the majority of gas stream energy into mechanical power to drive the compressor , accessories , just like the turboprop engine but The shaft on which the turbine is mounted drives something other than an aircraft propeller such as the rotor of a helicopter through the reduction gearbox . The engine is called turboshaft.

The turboshaft power takeoff may be coupled to, and driven directly by the turbine that drives the compressor, but it is more likely to be driven by a turbine of its own. Engines using a separate turbine for power takeoff are called free-turbine engines. A free-turbine engine has two major sections, the gas generator and the free turbine section. The function of the gas generator it to produce the required energy to drive the free turbine system, and it extracts about two-thirds of energy available from the combustion process. A turboprop engine is similar in design to a turboshaft engine except that it uses a reduction gear system to drive the propeller. The propeller may be driven from the gas generator, or it  may use its own free turbine in the same way as the turboshaft engine. The free turbine arrangement allows the propeller driven turbine to seek its optimum speed while the compressor turbine operates at the best speed for the compressor efficiency.

I read it but I don't know what it means Take a regular jet and add another fan around the oustide.  This outside fan has 2 secions, a front "propeller" section, and a smaller "driven" section that sits in the exhaust stream of the regular jet.  This driven section turns an additional shaft that spins the fan on, acting like a propeller.  It's basically the same as a PT6 type design, but the propeller is inside a duct, hence the other name ducted fan. This is not very easy to describe any more.  I used to do this all the time and not think anything of it. Until today.  Basically: How shall I put this.  It gives more blow for any given suck/bang. God help us all.....

A dual spool high bypass turbofan with a propeller out front instead of a fan?
