I was walking around my local walmart (cause that is what they pay me to do) and I happened to stop by the sporting goods counter. The sporting goods manager called me over and said "I just marked down some guns." My eyes perked up and I asked him which ones.
weatherby vanguard 270 or 3006syn/blued normally $388 marked down to $250 weatherby vanguard 270 or 3006wood/blued normally $480ish marked down to $350 savage single shot bolt .22 normally $98 marked down to $50 remington 700 syn/blued 22-250 normally $379 marked down to $250 remington 597 grey stock normally $136 marked down to $75(these were gone by the time i got there) My wife is so mad at me now So does anyone know how the weatherby vanguards are? I get an additional 10% off those prices, so I figured any way you cut it a bolt action 3006 for $225 NIB is a sweet deal. By the way these were home office markdowns, so any store that has these rifles(most stores should cause they are on the modular) should ahve them marked down also. |
I believe that the Vanguards are built by Howa on their 1500 action. Great gun for the money.
Are you sure there wasn't something covering up the "1" on that $75? I mean, damn, that's awesome. Of course, it's disappointing they were sold-out. |
yep, i saw the price tag for it laying there on the counter. the sporting goods manager called a couple local stores to see if anyone had one left. no one around here did |

DAMN, kali-wally's suck........why'd they got to suck so badly and f*ck up in the first place......I guess they shouldn't of been hiring illegal immigrants to work in the sporting goods dept. shouldn't of fired grandma/grandpa that used to work in that dept just because they were old and slow---but atleast they know something about firearms/ammo
+1 But first Im getting some country ham |
Sounds like a good idea. I'll look good riding the scoot home with a couple of rifle boxes strapped to it. |

weatherby vanguard 270 or 3006syn/blued normally $388 marked down to $250
weatherby vanguard 270 or 3006wood/blued normally $480ish marked down to $350 You bastard... My WalMart had them priced at $300 and $400. I bought the $300 gun last sunday in .30-06. The Vanguards are the Howa action. Supposed to be a good one. I made it out yesterday, finally, to get initial sightin. Should finish up today. Oh yeah, the synthetic stock is a Butler Creek with the recoil pad held on by screws. The Vanguard is a little front heavy w/synthetic stock so I intend to glue in some wheel weights to balance it out and add that expandable foam to the rest of that damn hollow butt. I don't think I did wrong by jumping on it for $300. Buy it and if you don't like it sell it. I'll bet at that price you could get your money back. Oh yeah. The Vanguards take Remington Model 700 scope bases. |
Thanks for the heads up on the scope bases. I just read this thread a little while ago and went to the local Wally World. I got the last .30-'06 Weatherby they had for $250. That is a hell of a deal for a knock about deer rifle. They were out of the Remington 597's though. |
I was pretty sure that the scope bases would be the same as the rem 700 just by looking at them. Nice to know I won't have to return them....
I have a Howa 1500 and can tell you three things about them:
1) They are amazingly accurate and well made. 2) The Weatherby Vanguard is a Howa 1500 in a different stock, and with a bolt locking safety. 3) They use Remington 700 scope bases. |
I went to 3 WalMarts this morning. Called 3 more. If you want a Savage or a Vanguard in .270, 30.06, or 7mm Mag for $250+ tax+ shipping+fees, LMK. I'll do my best to hook you up. I was hoping for a Rem700 in 22-250 for $250.
My local Wallyworld guy showed me the sale ticket for a Rem 597. $75.00 They were $99 yesterday. They cut the price to $75 this morning. "Give me 10!" "We've been sold out for months" He then explained wallyworld's policy on stores ordering guns to stock. He's almost as happy about wallyworld's policy as I am. I actually feel sorry fo him. Seriously, I do. He's trying to sell sporting goods, and build his department. Corporate won't let him run his corner of the business. I spent about an hour shooting the shit with him. I like the guy. He knows his shit. I'll try to say this as gently as I can. Here goes..... "FUCK WALMART!!!!!!!" |
I called around my area today, and they have the Vanguard rifles at a couple, but I haven't been able to track down the .22 single shot (that is what I'm in the market for). One store on the phone said they had a Mossberg camo 835 marked down from 300 to 200.
One of the Wal-Marts near me had a Weatherby (Howa) Vanguard Synthetic in 30-06 for $250 and a Remington 700 ADL synthetic in .243 for $250. I think they also had two 20 ga. shotguns, a Traditions Italian O/U and I think a Benelli semi-auto, each for $400. Good deals. |
the walmart local to me has a ruger 10/22 stainless with the hard wood stock for 208. Is this a good price or about right?
Even Wally World cannot compete with the ice cream truck. wganz ¶ |

Hmmmmm
Not too many members of the "He-Man Walmart Haters/Rant Club" chiming in on this thread... |

Closing them out before Kerry bans all gun sales. (I hope I am totally wrong) |

From my experiences this weekend, some Walmarts have quite a few of the Weatherbys and some are totally sold out. I bought one in .30-'06 here in Knoxville and all they had left was one in .270. I was in middle TN in Lebanon over the weekend and they had several in both calibers, and no one was even looking at them. No 597's at either store though.
After getting my Weatherby home, I found the trigger just a tad heavy but with quite a bit of creep. I polished the striker where it engages the sear and now it is not a bad trigger at all. They even tell you how to adjust the trigger in the owners manual. I have never owned a Weatherby in my life, but as cheap as this rifle is, it does seem to be fairly well made. I plan on trying to get the range in the next couple of weeks and see how it does. |
This happens every year. out with the old stuff that didn't sell very well in the previous years, and in with new stuff that may sell better. the weaterbys never sold very well, because at $388 original price, you could have gotten a Remington 700 for $10 cheaper. or a win 70 with a scope for about the same price. |
Just went to Wallyworld in Killeen,Tx and picked up two Savage .270 w/ accutrigger and Berretta 390 20ga for $968.00 out the door. Not a bad deal.
I adjust the trigger down all the way on my Weatherby and it's still crappy. But I'll live with it as I'm going hunting next weekend.
The weekend after that the trigger is coming off and getting polished to the gnat's ass. I don't mind a little working on an inexpensive rifle. But I would be real pissed if I had to invest time or money on a Mark V. Plus it gives me another project this winter. |
They're just making more room for the AKs, Uzis, and "assault pistols" whatever those are. |
I dont normally shop at walmart, but I just called over to the Walmart here to see if the had any rifles on closeout and they told me NO, not this close to hunting season, try back after the first of the year.

I was in the local WalMart this past Saturday and noticed the markdowns. I couldn't believe the prices. They has one of the Savage 110 package deals in .270 with the scope, bases & rings and some other goodies marked at $250.00. I called a buddy from work who was looking for one for his kid. By the time he got to the store two hours later they were almost all gone.
The Weatherby vanguards they had were in .30-06 and 7mm Mag only. I already have an ought-six and don't wan't a 7mm Mag. Too bad they didn't have a .300 Win. Mag...I'd have grabbed one of them at $250.00 (or better yet a .338, but I've never seen a Vanguard in WalMart in that caliber). I'm sure that the word has spread by now and there probably aren't many left at $250.00 in any caliber... |
VA people heads up:
The one in FairLakes has nothing marked down. Bastards. |
Oh, thank you for removing the profanity from the thread title. |
I went and looked last night, after reading this thread. A scoped model 70 was 10 dollars more than the slick Weatherby. BTB the one I went to in South Eastern MI didn't have any deals. All regular price, or close to regular price sale prices. No 597s and the only lever gun they had was a .22lr. |

vanguards are Howa 1500's. Good rifles for the money. I have a .308 heavy barrel that will shoot into 3/8" if I do my part. 175gr. Sierra HPBT or M-118 Match, IMR 4895, Fed 210M primers, R-P case. It will do this at 100yds. Only bad thing is the trigger. Need to replace it with a Timney. BTW, it had a synthetic stock on it. I replaced that with a Boyd target stock and steel-bedded it as per Iron Brigade Armory method with the appropriate modifications since it isn't a Rem. 700. Bedding is as tight as a nun's you know what. And the rifle shoots like a house afire. I have one of those Sniper Scopes on it . It ain't a Leupold but it works for me.

"Weatherby" is not a manufacturer, it is a license that is granted to a gun manufacturer such as Howa, Fabrique Nationale, etc. |
Just sold 2 Weatherby Van. Grds in 300 wthrby mag today at Wally World. The targets that were enclosed with each firearm showed 3 rounds in < 1" at 100 yards.
I own 2 Howa rifles .223 and 308. Will split hairs at great distances. |
That is Wal*Mart's normal price for that gun with 20" barrel. No deal. |
Plus, why go to Wal-Mart when assault weapons are raining from the sky... |
Thats what I got my 94 for. It was normally $265 but they marked it down to $200 right when I told them I was going to get it. I didn't argue with him |
i wish people realized what walmarts busniess practices did to the hunting and shooting industry.
